It’s a jolly little tune for bassoon quartet in a calypso style - ish. I seem to be doing a few of those at the moment. This version is for low saxophone quartet - 2 tenors, and either 2 baritones or a baritone and a bass/contrabass. It is dedicated to Jill Elliott for her help.

Somewhere, My Love, also know as Lara's Theme is the name given to aleitmotif written for the film Doctor Zhivago (1965) by composer MauriceJarre. By special request of Connie Francis, Paul Francis Webster later tookthe theme and added lyrics to it to create Somewhere,My Love. In 1967, Somewhere, MyLove was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. It lost to Michelle by The Beatles. Francis also had her version released as a single, and although itfailed to chart in the US, it became one of her biggest successesinternationally. This arrangement, suitable for concerts and many other occasions, is playable by either SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet, with optional Bass Saxophone doubling the Baritone. Duration is 2:40. The Liberty Bell for Saxophone Quartet (SATB or AATB)The Liberty Bell is ideal for any concert programmes that have an American, patriotic, or military focus. In the UK it will be a popular addition to Film & TV based programmes because of the march's use as the theme for Monty Python's Flying Circus.Sousa’s The Liberty Bell (March) for Military Band was published in 1893 and became an immediate hit. It was originally scored for: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, cymbals, bass drum, snare drum, and strings. However, it is often performed today by a standard Military Band, consisting of woodwind, brass, and percussion sections. An abbreviated version of Liberty Bell was used as the theme tune for the British television comedy sketch show, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, which ran from 1969 to 1974.This arrangement for Sax Quartet consists of the whole March with its Trio section. The dynamic shaping is based on that used by The President’s Own Band, but these are mostly editorial so can be changed by the performers. The full length is 3 minutes 35 seconds, but there is an optional ending at 2 minutes 35 seconds.

It would seem that this story is perhaps more of a legend than anything else, as no goblet was found in Bach’s estate at the end of his life and no documented proof of this story has been found. Goldberg was indeed a student of C. P. E Bach, Bach’s son and the son might have asked his father to write these works for his brilliant student. No manuscript for the Goldberg Variations exists, only a first edition corrected in the hand of Bach which contains certain tempo indications and other markings. The first edition also carried the following title: « Clavierübung, consisting of an Aria with diverse variations for the Harpsichord with two manuals composed for music lovers to refresh their spirits by J. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with soprano saxophone playing the melodic line. In verse 2, the tenor sax presents the tune in a lower register while the baritone plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The sopranoe and alto weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.
