Édith Piaf, also known as “The Little Sparrow,†rose to international stardom in the late 1930s as a symbol of French passion and tenacity. Of Piaf’s many ballads, La Vie en Rose, which she wrote, is remembered as her signature song. Other favorites among the singer's repertoire include Milord, Padam Padam, Mon Dieu, the charming Mon Manège à Moi and the anthemic Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien. Having a life beset by addictions and related health issues, Piaf died in France in 1963 at the age of 47. She continues to be revered as a national treasure. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet is a medley of some of Piaf's most well-known songs and may be performed in its entirety, or each song may be played individually. If you choose the latter option do not play the transition measures between songs. In order, the songs are La Vie en rose (Take Me To Your Heart Again), Piaf’s signature song; Milord (or Ombre de la Rue [Shadow of the Street]); Sous le ciel de Paris; Padam, padam and Non, je ne regrette rien (No, I do not regret anything). Swinging Shepherd Blues is a well-known tune by Moe Koffman, originally titled Blues a la Canadiana and renamed Swinging (or 'Swingin') Shepherd Blues in l957 when it was recorded by the composer, playing the flute, for the LP Hot and Cool Sax. Released as a single (Jubilee 5311), it was a hit internationally (Billboard magazine recorded it as peaking at 23rd position in 1958).  Among more than 300 recordings of the tune are versions by Count Basie, Herbie Mann, Mantovani, and David Rose. A vocal rendition, with lyrics by Rhoda Roberts and Kenny Jacobson, has been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, and more recently by Natalie Cole. The tune has also been recorded by various Canadians, from Oscar Peterson to the Edmonton Youth Orchestra. Koffman used Swinging Shepherd Blues as his signature tune until 2000. E lucevan le stelle (When the stars were brightly shining) is the romanza of Mario Cavaradossi, the tenor, a painter in love with Tosca, in the third act of Puccini's opera Tosca, composed in 1899 to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is sung by Cavaradossi while he waits for his execution on the roof of Castel Sant’Angelo.  The aria is introduced by a somber clarinet solo. The incipit of the melody (heard in outline earlier in the act, as the sky lightens and the gaoler prepares for the execution) is repeated on the lines O dolci baci, o languide carezze (With sweetest kisses, tenderest caresses), and also restated in forte in the closing bars of the opera, as Tosca jumps from the ramparts. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet will allow your audience to enjoy one of the most well-known arias in all of Opera while at the same time giving your quartet a chance to demonstrate your versatility. Christmas Day is a choral fantasy on old carols, was written in 1910. It was originally composed for SATB with parts for a sizeable orchestra. It lasts for about seven minutes. The work was dedicated ‘To the music students of Morley College’. Apparently it was extremely well-received and had a further presentation on 18 February at a music students’ ‘Tea and Social’ event. A number of well-known carols are used in this ‘fantasy.’ Throughout the piece, the composer makes use of ‘God rest you merry gentlemen,’ ‘The First Nowell’ and a traditional melody derived from Brittany used to set the words ‘Come ye lofty; come ye lonely.’ The Duration is approx. 6.16 minutes and the level is Advanced Intermediate.
