In fact, there is no comparison. However, my sincere hope is that since I have rendered some of Beethoven’s music as duets, his music is now more readily available to all permitting a greater number of musicians and all the people who hear their performances to come to know and love a bit of the world’s most valuable, breathtaking and beautiful music. In truth, Beethoven’s music has stood the test of time. He astonished people in his day whenever he performed his music or had his music played. He still does today. To be sure, his music has enhanced and enriched the lives of many of us for over 200 years. In performing and listening to these Scherzi you will find the whole of each work a marvel of Beethoven’s skill with sections reaching the sublime. The Art of the Fugue is considered to be one of the greatest musical creations everundertaken. A series of fourteen fugues (last of which is not complete) and four canonswhich are all based on the same d minor theme would perhaps seem, at first glance, to be apendantic academic exercise. However, in the hands of a composer such as Bach, themonothematic material is magnified through repetion which creates a sound universe whichis all it’s own.The work is also shrouded in mystery, as there are no tempo indications in the manuscript,no indications of the instrumentation which Bach intended and no clear indication as to theorder of the movements. An ordering was given to the work after the composer’s death bythe composer’s son, C. P. E. BACH which attempted to underline the pedogogical aspects ofthe composition (as a sort of a textbook for studying fugues and counterpoint). The orderused in this arrangement respects this ordering as it was given by Bach’s heirs. It wouldseem probable however, that this order was not that intended by Bach.The editor hopes that this new version of the Art of the Fugue will be useful in allowingSaxophonists everywhere to perform this great work. Born in Paris, she studied at first with her mother, then with Félix Le Couppey on piano, Marie Gabrie Augustin Savard, Martin Pierre Marsick on violin, and Benjamin Godard in music composition, but not officially, since her father disapproved of her musical education. Her teacher, Benjamin Goddard gave her an assignment to complete, a ballet symphonique, Callirhoë, Op. 37 (1888) that enjoyed many performances which added to its success. Movements from this work were extracted and fashioned for solo piano, namely Pas des écharpes, (Scarf Dance) and Pas des amphores, (Amphora Dance), both of which became popular staples of the piano repertory. This arrangement written in 2014 is playable by either SATB or AATB saxophone quartet. The original key has been changed to a more saxophone-friendly key. La mamma morta (They killed my mother) is an aria in the 1896 opera Andrea Chénier, a verismo opera in four acts by the composer Umberto Giordano, set to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica. The aria is a favourite show piece of a spinto soprano, especially ones who specialize in the Italian idiom of verismo. In the opera, the aria is placed in the third act. It is sung by the soprano character Maddalena di Coigny. At this point in the opera, Maddalena, daughter of a noble family, is telling Gérard, one of the rivals for her love, how she has been orphaned when her mother was killed protecting her during the turmoil of the French Revolution. In the famous Opera Scene from the 1993 film Philadelphia, the protagonist, played by Tom Hanks, translates into English the words of Maria Callas’ 1955 recording, in Italian, of La mamma morta. This arrangement is for SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet, with an optional Bass Saxophone part which doubles the Baritone. The Gnossiennes are originally six piano compositions written by the French composer Erik Satie over seven and a half years, between July1889 and January 1897. They were composed by Satie in the decade following the composition of the Trois Sarabandes (1887) and the Trois Gymnopédies (1888). Like these Sarabandes and Gymnopédies, the Gnossiennes are often considered dances. It is not certain that this qualification comes from Satie himself – the sarabande and the Gymnopaedia were at least historically known as dances. They have been arranged here for SATB Saxophone Quartet. Impressionistic in nature, each of these short musical gems depicts a different atmosphere and may be performed individually or as a six movement suite. Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite originally for piano, composed between 1914 and 1917. Each of its six movements is dedicated to the memory of friends of the composer who had died fighting in World War 1. Ravel himself was an army driver during the war. Tombeau is a musical term popular in the 17th century meaning a piece written as a memorial. It was Ravel's intention to pay tribute to his friends and pay homage to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suites, of which Couperin was a master; this is reflected in the six-movement structure of Ravel's piece. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet includes the Fugue, Forlane and Toccata. The Prelude, Menuet and Rigaudon are available on SMP Press in another arrangement under separate cover.
