Published by LINCOLN MUSIC PUBLICATIONS (A0.514822). This is the complete Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 Johann Sebastian Bach transcribed for Saxophone Quartet by Kenneth Abeling. It has an optional organ part if so desired, but will work perfectly well without. Originally written for three violins three violas, three celli, double bass and continuo, this transcription despite its difficulty may actually be accessible to more advanced non-professional quartets. It for the most part lays well on all of the instrument and once continuous lines have been dispersed to allow for some breaks. A lead part solo has been created over the second movement Phrygian cadence that would have been originally improvised by the harpsichordist. Either the organist or another Instrument could improvise their own solo here if desired. Playing Time 13:00. Nessun dorma (English: None shall sleep) is an aria from act three of Turandot, and is one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera. Luciano Pavarotti made it one of his signature arias. It is sung by Calaf, il principe ignoto (the unknown prince), who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. However, any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded. This arrangement for saxophones can be played by either SATB or AATB quartet, with an optional Bass saxophone part which doubles the Baritone part. I would like to believe that Puccini would have approved of this adaptation of what is perhaps his most recognizable aria since the original orchestration for Turandot calls for a very large orchestra that includes two on-stage Alto Saxophones. La Waltz Triste is an original composition playable by either SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet, both with an optional Bass Saxophone part which doubles the Baritone part. Performance time is 3:10. As the title would suggest, it has a rather sad and melancholic feel. Several events in my personal life of a tragic nature which occurred during the year it was written (2014) have subconsciously contributed to this feeling, including in May 2014 the loss of a friend and colleague, followed in September by the loss of my father-in-law. An ongoing health issue which began in April prevented me from playing and performing to the best of my ability. Thankfully this issue has resolved itself; there is a ray of hope for the future. La mamma morta (They killed my mother) is an aria in the 1896 opera Andrea Chénier, a verismo opera in four acts by the composer Umberto Giordano, set to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica. The aria is a favourite show piece of a spinto soprano, especially ones who specialize in the Italian idiom of verismo. In the opera, the aria is placed in the third act. It is sung by the soprano character Maddalena di Coigny. At this point in the opera, Maddalena, daughter of a noble family, is telling Gérard, one of the rivals for her love, how she has been orphaned when her mother was killed protecting her during the turmoil of the French Revolution. In the famous Opera Scene from the 1993 film Philadelphia, the protagonist, played by Tom Hanks, translates into English the words of Maria Callas’ 1955 recording, in Italian, of La mamma morta. This arrangement is for SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet, with an optional Bass Saxophone part which doubles the Baritone.
