La donna è mobile (The woman is fickle) is the Duke of Mantua's canzone from the beginning of act 3 of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto (1851). The inherent irony is that the Duke, a callous playboy, is the one who is mobile (inconstant). The canzone is famous as a showcase for tenors. Raffaele Mirate's performance of the bravura aria at the opera's 1851 premiere was hailed as the highlight of the evening. Before its first public performance (in Venice), it was rehearsed under tight secrecy: a necessary precaution, because it proved to be catchy and soon after its first public performance every gondolier in Venice was singing it. The present arrangement written in 2011 for Saxophone Quartet has been transposed to the more saxophone-friendly key of Bb from the original B major. Rock was beginning to take hold, however, a lot of bands added a smooth section in their songs to get more appeal. This song is no exception to that rule. The song is unusual in that the section that leads to the final chorus has several time signature changes, which was not the norm for the time. This song still rocks with the best of them. Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets. Swinging Shepherd Blues is a well-known tune by Moe Koffman, originally titled Blues a la Canadiana and renamed Swinging (or 'Swingin') Shepherd Blues in l957 when it was recorded by the composer, playing the flute, for the LP Hot and Cool Sax. Released as a single (Jubilee 5311), it was a hit internationally (Billboard magazine recorded it as peaking at 23rd position in 1958).  Among more than 300 recordings of the tune are versions by Count Basie, Herbie Mann, Mantovani, and David Rose. Several events in my personal life of a tragic nature which occurred during the year it was written (2014) have subconsciously contributed to this feeling, including in May 2014 the loss of a friend and colleague, followed in September by the loss of my father-in-law. An ongoing health issue which began in April prevented me from playing and performing to the best of my ability. Thankfully this issue has resolved itself; there is a ray of hope for the future. The text is a Scots-language poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 but based on an older Scottish folk song. In 1799, it was set to a traditional tune, which has since become standard. The poem's Scots title may be translated into standard English as old long since or, less literally, long long ago, days gone by, times long past, or old times. Consequently, for auld lang syne, as it appears in the first line of the chorus, might be loosely translated as for the sake of old times. Despite its initial failure, it is now one of the most popular of all ballets. The Neapolitan Dance occurs in Act III of the ballet.
