Dave Brubeckʼs iconic composition which featured on his 1959 album ʻTime Outʼ, has been carefully scored for standard saxophone quartet by Jim Fieldhouse.Brubeck, often regarded as one of the leading artists in the cool jazz movement, was inspired by the sound and rhythmic feel he heard when he encountered a group of Turkish street musicians. Blue Rondo was based upon the Turkish Aksak rhythm, and is written in 9/8 grouped as 2+2+2+3 for three bars followed by a 3+3+3 bar.In a conversation between Brubeck and these Turkish musicians they reportedly said that the aksak was to them what the blues was to western musicians, and so the title for the piece “Blue Rondo a la Turk” came about.This arrangement requires attention to detail, rhythmic precision and good dynamic control in order to drive the music forward with a light and lively feel and build to the big moments in the score where the ensemble can really let rip!

On Green Dolphin Street was arranged by Jim Fieldhouse for the Eclipse Saxophone Quartet from Manchester in the UK in 2005.This is a tour de force blistering arrangement for jazz saxophone quartet and is most definitely not for the fainthearted. Flipping between a fast samba and double time swing, this chart is a roast up for all four performers. The 1947 film theme for the movie Green Dolphin Street has been recorded countless times and become a well loved jazz standard, heres a version that's a potential showstopper (one way or an other!)With solo space for Alto 1 and Baritone saxes and a shout chorus which really motors along, this chart will be a great showpiece for accomplished quartets. Portrait of Tracy has become one of the landmark pieces of jazz bass guitar repertoire, featuring the natural harmonics of the instrument to create an etherial quality. Written by the American jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius, this atmospheric composition soon established itself as a bass standard and a benchmark for other players to aspire to. Jaco's composition has been sensitivley scored for three soprano saxophones and one baritone. This is perhaps an unusual choice of piece to transcibe for saxophone quartet but with the right aproach to performance, it lends itself well to this kind of ensemble. The three sopranos play the high floating bass harmonics, while the baritone holds down the pulse provided by the lower strings of the instrument. The four players will need to demonstrate incredible control, balance and ensemble flexibility, to create the right relaxed ambience for the music to sound natural. Scoring: Soprano Sax 1 Soprano Sax 2 Soprano Sax 3 Baritione Sax Difficulty Rating : advanced.

That's A Plenty was originally a piano rag written in 1914 by Lew Pollack but some time later, lyrics were added by Ray Gilbert. The tune soon became a very popular dixieland jazz standard.This arrangement was written for The Eclipse Saxophone Quartet in the UK and recorded on their 2001 album. It was meant very much as a tongue-in-cheek comedy vaudeville piece and proved very popular with both jazz and classical audiences.From an initial simple statement of the tune, this arrangement moves through several different styles, from bebop and show-two feel to an over-the-top waltz and becomes quite technically demanding in places. It was originally scored for two alto saxophones, tenor and baritone but there is also a soprano saxophone substitute for alto 1 part, to allow the chart to be performed on the standard quartet line-upGood time is key to getting this arrangement to groove and the dynamic markings and articulations are also massively important in bringing this music off the page. There is space for a roaring alto or soprano solo (which could be opened up if the soloist wishes to extend it) and a solo break for the baritone saxophonist.Difficulty Rating : Advanced Plus

Jazz Saxophone Quartet
My Funny Valentine, from the 1937 musical 'Babes in Arms' by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, is well established as a much loved jazz standard. This version, scored for standard SATB saxophone quartet, puts the familiar melody over a relaxed funky shuffle groove, for a more contemporary twist.
There is no jazz improvisation required to play this arrangement but with several changes of style and a tricky soli section, there are plenty of moments to challenge the performers in this interesting take on a famous tune.
