'Bossa Copa' initially was supposed to be a piece for a Big band but eventually became the first Bulgarian symphonic composition with saxophone quartet as soloists. It was written for the 12th International composition competition in 7/8 (Sofia, Bulgaria) and was awarded with 2nd prize. The title is a word-play and comes from the way the composer mixes the rhythms of Brazilian 'bossa nova' and the Bulgarian folklore dance 'kopanitsa' (11/8 or 11/16). The soloists are the members of Quartet 'Gori' - the first Bulgarian sax quartet whose founder is Goran Tashev (alto sax).

Jules Émile Frédéric Massenet (May 12, 1842 – August 13, 1912) was a French composer best known for his operas. His compositions were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and he ranks as one of the greatest melodists of his era. Thaïs is a three-act opera with a French libretto by Louis Gallet based on the novel Thaïs by Anatole France. Its famous Méditation, the entr'acte for violin and orchestra played between the scenes of Act II, is an oft-performed concert music piece; it has been arranged for many different instruments. In the present arrangement written in 2012, the original key of D major has been changed to Db to make it more suitable for the saxophone range. The soprano saxophone is the featured voice. Look no further than the Snowdrift Galop written by British composer, Charles Coote Jnr. It starts off just like Jingle Bells - and the Jingle Bells theme keeps coming back, but is it actually Jingle Bells? It also has a march-like theme and a lovely Trio section. All players get to play important melodic material in this arrangement.Snowdrift Galop was published in London in 1868 in a small collection of works by various composers. The opening theme is immediately recognisable as the popular holiday favourite, Jingle Bells, which was published 11 years earlier, yet the composer gives no reference or credit to the earlier work. Although the opening soprano sax theme is the same as Jingle Bells, we get a stately march instead of the familiar Jingle Bells chorus. A lovely Trio introduces another new tune which is played by tenor, then baritone sax, before returning to the opening section on Alto.Charles Coote Jnr (1831-1916) was a prolific English composer of popular music, including quadrilles, waltzes and galops. His music was written for society balls and subsequently published for piano, so that others could play them at local dances or in their ownhomes. He was the son of composer and bandmaster, Charles Coote (1809-1880). Coote Snr worked for the 6th Duke of Devonshire for 30 years, conducted his private orchestra, and was referred to by the Duke as his personal pianist. Growing up in this environment would have ensured that Coote Jnr was well connected with British society.Duration - 4 minutes.

In 1905 Gustav Holst became Director of Music at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith, London, a post which he retained right up until his death in 1934. St. Paul's Suite was written for the school’s string orchestra in 1912. The work is in four movements: a Jig, reminiscent of English fiddle tunes; a muted Ostinato (Presto); an Intermezzo which starts fairly slowly and softly, switching abruptly to a short Vivace section. The rhythmic tune here is based on an Arab song which Holst had noted in his sketchbook a few years earlier while on holiday in Algeria. After this brief interlude, the music returns to the slower opening tempo, and in the very last bars of the movement ‘the descending chromatic sixths are like a gesture of farewell to the good old days: never again did [Holst] indulge in such an unblushing display of nineteenth-century romanticism’--- these rather severe words are his daughter’s, quoted from her biography of her father. The Finale is framed around a familiar English folk tune (the Dargason), which, in the course of the movement, is used as a counter-melody to the even more familiar Greensleeves. Holst was evidently fond of this tune, as he also used it as the concluding movement of his well-known Suite No. 2 in F, Op. 28b for Military Band. Durations: 1. Jig 4:00; 2. Ostinato 1:28; 3. Intermezzo 3:41; 4. Finale (The Dargason) 4:00; Total time 13:09 I wrote this arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet in 2004, with revisions in 2015. Swinging Shepherd Blues is a well-known tune by Moe Koffman, originally titled Blues a la Canadiana and renamed Swinging (or 'Swingin') Shepherd Blues in l957 when it was recorded by the composer, playing the flute, for the LP Hot and Cool Sax. Released as a single (Jubilee 5311), it was a hit internationally (Billboard magazine recorded it as peaking at 23rd position in 1958).  Among more than 300 recordings of the tune are versions by Count Basie, Herbie Mann, Mantovani, and David Rose. A vocal rendition, with lyrics by Rhoda Roberts and Kenny Jacobson, has been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, and more recently by Natalie Cole. The tune has also been recorded by various Canadians, from Oscar Peterson to the Edmonton Youth Orchestra. Koffman used Swinging Shepherd Blues as his signature tune until 2000. Flight of the Bumblebee (1900) Nicolai Rimsky Korsakov SATB Saxophone Quartet Everyone knows Flight of the Bumblebee. Originally it was an instrumental interlude in the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan (1900). Later it gained fame as a piano piece. As arranged for SATB Saxophone Quartet, it is a great little show off piece for a moderately advanced quartet. While no altissimo is required in any part, it requires fast fingers and a good command of chromatic scales from all players. Many people believe Flight of the Bumblebee to be a very difficult workout for musicians. If you're well practiced on chromatic scales and comfortable with alternate fingerings, it's really not so difficult as it sounds. There is no need to tell your audience this fact. As for it being relentlessly fast, the tempo given in the original orchestra score is only 144bpm. Perfomance time on this arrangement is about 1:15 but nothing is stopping you from playing it faster.

Purcell wrote the incidental music for the play Abdelazer (sometimes spelled 'Abdelazar') in 1695, shortly before his death. It is a lively mix of songs and dances of the time. Typical of the day, several of the movements became well known as popular songs. The rondo was later made famous by Benjamin Britten, who used it as the theme for his set of variations, ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’. Rondo About the Composer: Henry Purcell (born c. 1659, London, England—died November 21, 1695, London) was an English composer of Baroque music. Purcell's musical style was uniquely English, although it incorporated Italian and French elements. Generally considered among the greatest English opera composers, Purcell is included with John Dunstaple and William Byrd as England's most important early music composers. Later, Purcell's music also had a strong influence on the composers of the English musical renaissance of the early 20th century.The cause of Purcell's untimely death at the age of 36 is unclear. There are many theories, some preposterous (he died from chocolate poisoning), some more likely: he died of tuberculosis. Purcell was universally mourned as a very great master of music.  Following his death, the officials at Westminster honoured him by unanimously voting that he be buried with no expense spared in the north aisle of the Abbey.
