Bach: French Suite No. 5, BWV 816, for Saxophone Quartet
Quatuor de Saxophones: 4 saxophones
Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Te…
(+)
Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1406650 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 59 pages. Jmsgu3 #989408. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1406650). The importance of Bach's French Suites lies in their unique blend of French and Italian styles despite the misleading title. These suites, composed between 1722 and 1725 for the clavier, showcase Bach's mastery in stylizing traditional dances like allemandes, courantes, sarabandes, and gigues. While named French Suites by later sources like Johann Nikolaus Forkel, they follow Italian conventions with some French influences. The suites offer a rich musical experience, bridging different European styles and serving as valuable teaching pieces. Despite the misleading title, Bach's French Suites are a testament to his compositional genius and continue to be cherished by musicians and audiences alike. The history behind Bach's French Suites is intertwined with a bittersweet period in Bach's life. In May 1720, Bach embarked on a trip, leaving his wife, Maria Barbara, and four children. Tragically, upon his return, he discovered that Maria Barbara had passed away. This loss led to a significant change in Bach's personal life as he became a single father mourning his wife. Despite this tragedy, Bach found love again with Anna Magdalena Wülcken, whom he married. As a gesture of affection and to cultivate her musical skills, Bach composed music for Anna Magdalena, including what would later become the French Suites. These suites were likely performed at court and reflected the couple's intimate musical companionship. The French Suites were not published during Bach's lifetime, possibly because he did not deem it challenging enough. Today, these suites offer an accessible path to Bach's music and are cherished for their stylized dance movements inspired by French and Italian forms.

Woodwind Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1405104 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #988142. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1405104).

Concert,Contemporary. 27 pages. Sonata Grendel Publishing #5360153. Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837489). The Passage of Orpheus was originally composed as the second movement of a Suite for Wind Ensemble. The original suite, Mortals, Gods, and Heroes, consisted of three short tone poems depicting three tales from Greek mythology. The Passage of Orpheus depicts Orpheus’s trip to the underworld to bring back his wife, Eurydice. The music is composed as set of variations that intertwines Orpheus’s theme with each of the characters he meets along the way: Charon the ferryman, Cerberus the three-headed dog, Sisyphus forever rolling a boulder up a hill, Persephone the queen of the underworld, and finally, his beloved Eurydice. Tragically, he fails to bring her back.

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1434546 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 475 pages. Jmsgu3 #1014683. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1434546). The Partitas, BWV 825-830, are a set of six keyboard suites composed by Johann Sebastian Bach and published in 1731 as his Opus 1, the first of his works to be published under his direction. They were among the last keyboard suites Bach composed, written between 1725 and 1731, after the English and French Suites. Each partita consists of a series of dances, typically opening with a prelude-like movement followed by an Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, and Gigue, with additional dances inserted. The tonalities of the six partitas form an ascending and descending pattern of intervals, starting and ending with keys related to Bach's name (B-flat and B). Bach supervised the publication, initially publishing them separately before compiling them into the 1731 Clavier-Übung collection. Many surviving printed copies contain handwritten annotations, some likely stemming from Bach himself, providing insights into the composer's final intentions. They are among Bach's greatest keyboard works, demonstrating mastery of counterpoint, expression, and the instrument's technical capabilities. The partitas range widely in character, from the poetic No. 1 in B-flat to the monumental tragic No. 6 in E minor. So, the Partitas represent the culmination of Bach's genius for keyboard composition and his final thoughts on the dance suite genre.YouTube Playlist Link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLT9KtY0S7DRDEAJI68McqwUGB6XPMvGHl.

Saxophone quartet Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.764661 Composed by Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857-1919). Arranged by James Pybus. Opera,Romantic Period. 10 pages. James Pybus #37123. Published by James Pybus (A0.764661). Vesti la giubba (Put on the costume) is a famous tenor aria from Ruggero Leoncavallo's 1892 opera I Pagliacci. Vesti la giubba is sung at the conclusion of the first act, when Canio discovers his wife's infidelity, but must nevertheless prepare for his performance as Pagliaccio the clown because The show must go on. The aria is often regarded as one of the most moving in the operatic repertoire of the time. The pain of Canio is portrayed in the aria and exemplifies the entire notion of the tragic clown: smiling on the outside but crying on the inside. This is still displayed today, as the clown motif often features the painted-on tear running down the cheek of the performer. The 1904 recording by Enrico Caruso was the first million-selling record in history. This aria is often used in popular culture and has been featured in many renditions, mentions, and spoofs. In this arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet written in 2013, the original key has been transposed to a more saxophone-friendly key. The tenor saxophone is featured. It memorializes the tragic event on the Kent State University campus on May 4, 1970. In the original key from the single, this song tells the story in such a short period of time. In this arrangement I also included a short history behind that song that could be used as a narration at performances. This arrangement include the live ending from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's 4-Way Street double LP. Duration = 3:15. Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 27 pages. James Pybus #34115. Published by James Pybus (A0.764635). La Waltz Triste is an original composition playable by either SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet, both with an optional Bass Saxophone part which doubles the Baritone part. Performance time is 3:10. As the title would suggest, it has a rather sad and melancholic feel. Several events in my personal life of a tragic nature which occurred during the year it was written (2014) have subconsciously contributed to this feeling, including in May 2014 the loss of a friend and colleague, followed in September by the loss of my father-in-law. An ongoing health issue which began in April prevented me from playing and performing to the best of my ability. Thankfully this issue has resolved itself; there is a ray of hope for the future. Not wanting to wallow in self-pity, I look forward to more cheerful days ahead. Contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.
