That's A Plenty was originally a piano rag written in 1914 by Lew Pollack but some time later, lyrics were added by Ray Gilbert. The tune soon became a very popular dixieland jazz standard.This arrangement was written for The Eclipse Saxophone Quartet in the UK and recorded on their 2001 album. It was meant very much as a tongue-in-cheek comedy vaudeville piece and proved very popular with both jazz and classical audiences.From an initial simple statement of the tune, this arrangement moves through several different styles, from bebop and show-two feel to an over-the-top waltz and becomes quite technically demanding in places. Jazz Saxophone Quartet
My Funny Valentine, from the 1937 musical 'Babes in Arms' by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, is well established as a much loved jazz standard. This version, scored for standard SATB saxophone quartet, puts the familiar melody over a relaxed funky shuffle groove, for a more contemporary twist.
There is no jazz improvisation required to play this arrangement but with several changes of style and a tricky soli section, there are plenty of moments to challenge the performers in this interesting take on a famous tune.

Runaway Steam Train Boogie is a fun programmatic saxophone quartet (SATB) illustrating a steam train on its runaway journey. Air blown through the instrument whilst moving the fingers depicts the release of steam at the start of the train's journey soon followed by the whistle portrayed through lip scoops. The melody line is shared between soprano and alto saxophones with the tenor and baritone saxophones characterising the train engine with the opening section outlining a 12-bar blues sequence. The tenor saxophone takes up the mantle carrying the tune through a later minor section. The train gathers pace throughout the piece arriving at 220BPM in a final section flourish. Elgar’s legacy has been widely debated, but there is no doubt of his influence on ‘English’ music and composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, but also further afield, on composers as diverse as Richard Strauss, Jean Sibelius, and Igor Stravinsky. Along with a central theme woven and varied throughout the work, each movement of Engima Variations is also a musical illustration, based on a family member or close friend of Elgar, and indeed Elgar himself. He dedicated the work “to my friends pictured withinâ€. “Nimrod†is the name given to the ninth movement, based on Elgar’s editor and publisher, Augustus J, Jaeger. Musically, there is an obvious hint at the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Pathetique, but beyond this there are beautiful legato lines spread across the whole ensemble and a wide variety of timbral, dynamic, and tempo colourations. “Nimrod†has become a popular piece as a standalone item – often featuring in funerals, memorial services, and other solemn events such as Remembrance Sunday. Hans Zimmer also adapts the piece for use in the score for the 2017 film Dunkirk, and has become a standard tune to represent stoic ‘Britishness’. The text is a Scots-language poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 but based on an older Scottish folk song. In 1799, it was set to a traditional tune, which has since become standard. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change in key, so that it is comfortable for all instruments in the formation, thus maintaining the essence of the striking melody, as well as using it for ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Op. 125 incorporates part of the poem An die Freude (To Joy), a hymn written by Friedrich Schiller, with the text sung by soloists and a choir in its last movement.
