By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a lead sheet with lyrics, chords and guitar fret boards, for a jazz ensemble, large or small, with singer or solo instrument. Thus, it is the basis for a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations. The audio sample is a jazz quartet: An iReal Pro swing accompaniment combined with my tune from Finale PrintMusic.Wait It Out (Alternate Version), and Wait It Out (Rock Version) are also for sale on this web site. The alternate version is also a swing -- same tune with different harmonization. The March 2020 Covid-19 influenza scare is the subject of Wait It Out. The lyrics express an individual’s efforts to cope with being isolated, away from friends – social distancing to discourage the spread of the flu. I wrote this tune in the Locrian mode, which conveys a sad, surreal mood associated with self-isolation. The coda brightens the mood with a change to Ionian (major) mode.Here are the lyrics:Wait It Out1. I’m not having fun home alone. I’m chewing my nails to the bone. I don’t pretend to comprehend. I’ll just wait it out to the end. 2. Well, I just want to sit, drink and eat, But going on line is a treat. And I know this much, we’ll stay in touch! Waiting this out to the end. ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR JAZZ QUARTET This work is from series of 6 related pieces of new music that I have composed and arranged for a new Originals quartet that had its debut on Tuesday March 28 as the final concert of the 2023 season of the long running noontime spring jazz series at the Midwest Trust Center in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The music is written and arranged for a modern jazz quartet. I perform on alto saxophone with the multi-talented William Crain on piano, the master bassist Gerald Spaits, and the brilliant young drummer Morgan Rogers. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. However, I truly welcome other ensembles to perform and program these selections of music too.THIS MUSIC IS BASED UPON THE PHILOSOPHY OF ABUNDANCE (COVEY)Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit – even with those who help in the production. They also have a very hard time being genuinely happy for the successes of other people – even, and sometimes especially, members of their own family or close friends and associates. Conversely, Abundance Mentality flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision making. Published by Chicory Music (A0.734441). Vehicle is a song recorded by American rock band The Ides of March for their debut studio album of the same name (1970). It was released as the lead single from the album in March 1970 through Warner Bros. Records. Written by vocalist and frontman Jim Peterik, the song is about a girl that often used him for his mode of transportation, leading Peterik to surmise that he was little more than her vehicle. The arrangement includes a distinctive horn section riff, which caused some listeners to mistake the band for Blood, Sweat and Tears, who were also popular in that era.Vehicle was a commercial success, and was purported to be the fastest-selling single in the history of Warner Bros. at that time. It peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, while reaching the top 5 in Canada and top 30 in the United Kingdom. Despite this, the Ides of March never had another hit single, leaving them one-hit wonders. Although gospel songs were traditionally played by jazz bands at funerals or church, it is now common that these songs are also played in secular venues and parades.Down by the Riverside†is an example of such a song, adapted by jazz musicians to fit the New Orleans jazz or brass band style. It has been a staple in New Orleans jazz since at least the early 1920s. The former version in Common Time was adopted by the State of Maryland as its State Song until 1921 when it was abandoned because of its association with divisive political and racial divisions in the Civil War. It has also become a ‘jazz standard ’and this arrangement, like some other versions, retains a ‘martial’ and ‘marching’ feel with the fanfares.

Children's Song composed and arranged by Woodwind teacher and performer Don Turoso is arranged for a front line of three horns with four parts in the rhythm section. All parts are integrally important. This was recorded in 2005 on the Cd The Don Turoso Septet. It is a medium tempo Latin feel with moderate range demands. A very pretty melody with plenty of open area for solos in an A - B section. The introduction can also be used as a break section between solos or just on the DC before repeating the head leading to the coda. I rate this arrangement in the 3-4 range. Recordings are available, as indicated for purchase or the listen to online. Look for other Jazz combo, Big Band, Marching Band, and other titles to follow.
