The former version in Common Time was adopted by the State of Maryland as its State Song until 1921 when it was abandoned because of its association with divisive political and racial divisions in the Civil War. It has also become a ‘jazz standard ’and this arrangement, like some other versions, retains a ‘martial’ and ‘marching’ feel with the fanfares.

Whiting, first came to notice in 1927 in the show Ziegfeld Follies. As a popular jazz standard, it has subsequently been recorded many times by well-known artists. In 1940, Artie Shaw recorded it with his Big Band and he then played it again with his small group the Gramercy Five.  This arrangement, with its mainly Clarinet lead, pays tribute to the latter’s style.

Catoctin Snowfall was inspired by a day of snow at Catoctin Mountain in Maryland. It begins peacefully and increases tempo to invoke images of snow blown by mountain winds. The second section, sounding unresolved, serves as a springboard for the soloist. After the solos, the piece returns to a peaceful mood with images of snow-covered woods. As with most of my music, Catoctin Snowfall can be performed in different ways. In addition to expressing a snow storm, it can have a joyful spirit of children (or one's inner child) enjoying the snow. Long Road to Georgia is a simple trad jazz tune, written at a time when I felt a longing to be back home (which isn't Georgia, that just had a better ring to it than my actual home).Do check out the recording for a mock-up rendition. The strings are improvised and aren't necessary, but make the song sound a bit sweeter. The last play-through of the tune in the recording is done with other instruments improvising around the tune for a proper Dixieland feel. I wholeheartedly recommend this - it adds so much to the overall feel if you've got other instruments noodling around. The slow, simple chord progression makes this a really good tune for people who are newer to jazz & improvisation.
