A setting of a hymn tune with great funky bebop riff which is simple and groovin at times and also harmonically daring and rich. Big Chords and great nonfunctional Gospel sounding voice leading produces a striking example of the beauty qualities of this astounding gem. Piece includes distinct and unique ideas and vamps and a setting of the hymn tune before concluding. 2 page arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Deeply funky tune draws from inspiration in Hezekiah Walker, Chick Corea, Ricky Dillard, Charlie Parker, and Theolonious Monk. It was used for a piano and drum prelude in church, for a moment in time.

Allan Abbadia brings African structural thinking into horizontal thinking built by layers. Clef combinations in melodic and rhythmic counterpoints will develop throughout the composition.The rhythmic base and the arrangement was thought of from the high frequencies to the low ones.In instrumentation, Gan (Cowbel) is the rhythmic center followed by Lé, Rumpi and Rum (a more serious Atabaque soloing freely) completing the percussions with Xhaker, Clave and CuÃca.The drums were designed to complement the percussion.The Double Bass maintains sustain.In the woodwinds, flute, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, fluguelhorn and trombone.A choir of voices is also present in the background.The tempo is 7/4 but we can think of a binary rhythm in subdivision by 7 instead of 8.Travel through time and the sensations of Memórias.

Uxmal At Midnight is a slow tango. The tune is fairly simple however it has a beauty that invokes images and feelings of this magical place. This is one of my minimalist pieces. There are times when I use extended forms and times when I need only a few measures to convey a particular mood. The essential features of this piece are its simplicity, harmonic color, and use of space. The one exception to its simplicity is the shifting time. Like other pieces of mine that use shifting time, this music has a fluid movement -- with time expanding and contracting in ways that feel natural to me. For contrast, I decided to have the solo section entirely in 4/4. My minimalist pieces, and others that have a great amount of freedom, are heavily dependent upon the performers to bring the music to life. Shifting time funk (for 5 wind instruments and rhythm section)! The title expresses my disdain for contending with monster SUVs when driving on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC. As I envision this music, it is funky and adventurous. The piece is a minimalist composition -- the melody is only 16 bars. However, it has expanded improvisation concepts for the soloist and the ensemble. The ensemble's collective improvisation is to sound like music coming out of car windows in traffic. The sounds change quickly. Different kinds of music come, go, and overlap. Radios (or electronics) may be used for additional layers of sound. The soloists use four chord progression patterns. Each soloist determines which patterns to play and their sequence. The patterns can be played in any order. Ideally, the patterns are determined within a performance instead of before. The soloist communicates the patterns, and when to shift to a new pattern, to the ensemble by hand signals. Music styles can also shift within a solo. Performers can take the music in any creative direction they want to go with it. This is my second original composition. It has a Tom Kennedy-Mezzoforte fusion type feel. I wrote this a month ago, with total of three drafts. Writing a piece of music is like writing a screenplay. Very first draft had a motif to build the tutti section upon, a whole different melody, consisting of basically a complex melody, and the chord progression was two times faster. I wasn't happy with the direction, so I decided to slow down the chord progression, write a completely new melody, and only then I had the structure planned out. I named Episode, because my neighbor at the dorm, who is a classical pianist, said that this idea sounds like an episode (musical form). I am not sure if it reflects any understanding of said form, but I will say this. This is definitely an episode of pure passion. This package includes the score, parts: both transposed (Eb and Bb) and concert pitch, and the audio demo of how it should sound like.
