Here’s an easy-going swing tune to feature your trombonists! This original from Aaron Hettinga features some nice soli section playing along with space for solos. There are plenty of texture changes around: tight high harmony, call & response, solo support, group articulations, great chances to showcase quartet section playing and provide opportunities to teach developing players about ABAC form and ensemble.While the top two bone parts can be a bit taxing in range (the lead part especially as it hangs around high C for the much of the last page), the lower parts are mostly straightforward for what’s found in Big Band swing charts.

Released as a single from their eponymous debut album, it reached No. 4 on the R&B chart and No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. The tune was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011, which honors recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old. The A.V. Club called the song a classic deeply rooted in New Orleans music tradition.Cissy Strut was featured in the films Jackie Brown, Red, King Richard and Another Round as well as in the BBC television series The Pursuit of Love.In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked Cissy Strut at number 158 on their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list, one of the handful of instrumentals to make the list.Many transcribers of this tune obscure the 1/4 notes by improperly beaming the 1/16 notes. This arrangement fixes that issue. After solos the tune returns to the B section and then the A section This is called the Boden form used by Bartok and is frequently used when playing jazz ballads.This arrangement includes optional horn parts (trumpet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trombone, and baritone saxophone). These parts include chords where the players can farm out the various notes to different horns.

This version was re-purposed from a big band version of mine for a Trumpet solo with 13 trumpets. Pi, Why? is an unconventional blues that uses Pi (3.1415926....) as a sequence of melodic intervals. Do not let that scare you away -- the music swings. The structure of this 18-bar tune is based on 3-bar phrases and there is shifting time in places. The first 32 digits of Pi are used in this tune: 3.1415926535897932384626433832795. Here is how I converted the Pi numbers to melodic intervals: Simply, each number becomes an interval in relation to the root of the chord being used at the time. That is, the relationships change when the chords change. The intervals are natural or altered (b9, #9, #11, etc.) chord tones or higher tensions. For 3 on V7 chords, I use either natural 3 or minor 3 (enharmonically #9). The tune starts with the sequence of 3 (#9), 1, 4 (#11), 1, 5, 9 (b9) played twice with C7 (#9) and then transposed down a half-step for B7 (#9). The next sequence -- 2 (b9), 6, 5, 3 (natural), 5 -- is played with the Bb7 (#9) chord and so on through the rest of the 32-note sequence. While 3 is the first number of Pi, that is not why the tune is structured with 3-bar phrases. Simply, the 3-bar phrases felt natural and swinging to me. This tune has a strong blues flavor; however, it is not a conventional 12-bar blues in its structure or chord progression. The A part is 12 bars. Then, the B part is 6 bars with alternating 4/4 and 3/4 (one can think of it as 7/4). The B part also has a harmonic shift from V7 (#9) chords to V9 sus4 and major 7th chords. This is a peaceful bossa nova that is dedicated to Carla Bley, one of my favorite jazz composers. It is a fairly simple tune. Harmonically, it is built around D9 sus4 and Dm7 (b5) chords. I stumbled upon this pattern one day as I was playing piano. I immediately liked the feeling it creates and the shift in harmonic color (between implied Dorian and Locrian modes). This is the only tune of mine that uses it. The measure of 5/4 coming unexpectedly gives a push to the tune's momentum. As I worked on this tune I thought about having another section, but nothing clicked. I came to the conclusion that the music said everything it wanted to say in 18 bars. This piece is part of a series of tango-jazz compositions. Each one explores a particular quality of the tango. Number 2 expresses a mysterious mood and has a touch of blues. New Tango No. 2 is an unusual tango in several ways. Given that many of my tangos have shifting time, this one is entirely in 4/4. The A part is 12 bars. A distinctive feature of this section is the use of blues scales over triads. The B part is 8 bars. As a contrast, this section has a harmonic shift to minor 9th chords. The tune's 20-bar AB form is used for solos. To underscore a mysterious mood, the coda has a false ending (2nd bar of the coda) before starting up again (repeating bars 9-11 of the A section) and leading into the real ending.
