This is a peaceful bossa nova that is dedicated to Carla Bley, one of my favorite jazz composers. It is a fairly simple tune. Harmonically, it is built around D9 sus4 and Dm7 (b5) chords. I stumbled upon this pattern one day as I was playing piano. I immediately liked the feeling it creates and the shift in harmonic color (between implied Dorian and Locrian modes). This is the only tune of mine that uses it. The measure of 5/4 coming unexpectedly gives a push to the tune's momentum. As I worked on this tune I thought about having another section, but nothing clicked. I came to the conclusion that the music said everything it wanted to say in 18 bars. ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR JAZZ QUARTET This work is from series of 6 related pieces of new music that I have composed and arranged for a new Originals quartet that had its debut on Tuesday March 28 as the final concert of the 2023 season of the long running noontime spring jazz series at the Midwest Trust Center in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The music is written and arranged for a modern jazz quartet. I perform on alto saxophone with the multi-talented William Crain on piano, the master bassist Gerald Spaits, and the brilliant young drummer Morgan Rogers. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. However, I truly welcome other ensembles to perform and program these selections of music too.THIS MUSIC IS BASED UPON THE PHILOSOPHY OF ABUNDANCE (COVEY)Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit – even with those who help in the production. They also have a very hard time being genuinely happy for the successes of other people – even, and sometimes especially, members of their own family or close friends and associates. Conversely, Abundance Mentality flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision making. The funky style with shuffled 16th notes along with the latin montuno like piano part makes this song a real groover. Horn voices are 1&2 on trumpet or alto sax, 3&4 on trombone or tenor sax. A percussion player can easily join in. There is a section where all horn players play a unison line on soprano recorders, which can be a lot of fun. However, this can also be accomplished by the keyboard player using a flute sound, if no recorders are available. For the vocals, only lyrics are provided (since it is mostly spoken). A full score and parts for all instruments are included. The mp3 does not include the guitar part, nor the improvised keyboard fills. Feel free to repeat certain sections or open up the collective improvisation part for an exciting live performance.

It serves as a good basis for a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations.The audio sample is a jazz quintet: A slow swing jazz accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with my duet tunes from Finale PrintMusic. In this sample, a flute takes the accompaniment (treble clef), with a baritone sax in the bass clef. The main tune (bass clef) is accompanied, making this an unusual duet lead sheet. For example, a flute may accompany a baritone singer. An option is to interchange the voice roles (e.g., main tune octave higher, accompaniment octave lower), or use one of the tunes of the duet by itself. I wrote this piece in honor of immigrants, in recognition of the courage it takes to move to a new country and learn a new language. New immigrants often go through difficulties and setbacks, including persecution from citizens of their adopted country.
