This ballad had its debut in the classic film White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney.This arrangement was written as a Head chart where, after the initial rundown of the melody, the form is repeated for as many soloists as are desired before a final repeat playing the tune and proceeding to the second ending. Chord changes are provided in all parts for flexibility in soloist selection. For the most part, the ensemble parts are accessible to a broad range of playing abilities, but the top part is the greater challenge for range and melodic lyricism.Performance options: This ballad runs the risk of dragging along so slowly that it feels interminable. Even at a moderately slow tempo, it’s important to keep things moving. If it feels that the solo section takes too long, it also works well to bring the ensemble back at the B section of the melody (meas. 21) for a briefer wrap up.

This is my second original composition. It has a Tom Kennedy-Mezzoforte fusion type feel. I wrote this a month ago, with total of three drafts. Writing a piece of music is like writing a screenplay. Very first draft had a motif to build the tutti section upon, a whole different melody, consisting of basically a complex melody, and the chord progression was two times faster. I wasn't happy with the direction, so I decided to slow down the chord progression, write a completely new melody, and only then I had the structure planned out. I named Episode, because my neighbor at the dorm, who is a classical pianist, said that this idea sounds like an episode (musical form). I am not sure if it reflects any understanding of said form, but I will say this. This is definitely an episode of pure passion. This package includes the score, parts: both transposed (Eb and Bb) and concert pitch, and the audio demo of how it should sound like.

A slow, soulful blues for those times when we need to play a slow, soulful blues. The title comes from a day when I was reflecting upon lost ancient civilizations and wondering about their music. What did the music sound like? Did the musicians back then have steady gigs? This is a fairly conventional 12-bar blues, however it has some interesting quirks. The 4th bar has a sustained C with V7 (#9) chords moving chromatically upwards against it. In terms of conventional harmony, the C is a wrong note on several of the chords (like the Db7). The chord changes have reharmonization in several places. The ending, with a shift to major 7th chords, is unusual for a blues. Mike Strand, ASCAPThis is a lead sheet with lyrics, chords and guitar fret boards, for a jazz group, small, or large, with singer or solo instruments. It serves as a good basis for a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations.The audio sample is a jazz quintet: A slow swing jazz accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with my duet tunes from Finale PrintMusic. In this sample, a flute takes the accompaniment (treble clef), with a baritone sax in the bass clef. The main tune (bass clef) is accompanied, making this an unusual duet lead sheet. For example, a flute may accompany a baritone singer. An option is to interchange the voice roles (e.g., main tune octave higher, accompaniment octave lower), or use one of the tunes of the duet by itself. I wrote this piece in honor of immigrants, in recognition of the courage it takes to move to a new country and learn a new language. New immigrants often go through difficulties and setbacks, including persecution from citizens of their adopted country. This, despite the recent immigrant ancestry of most of the persecutors, notably in the USA. In the subtitle of Immigrant Blues, I recognize my own immigrant ancestors, and also Anders Lundegård, who, like my paternal grandparents, moved to the USA from Sweden. Anders helped me with this piece, with his reviews and comments. **Here are the lyrics for Immigrant Blues: 1. Moving to the U. S., far away. Life here is so bad, I will not stay. Talked to Mom and Dad, they said OK. I want to make a place for them some day. 2. First time in the States was no picnic. Half the time no work, and I got sick. Some folks try to help, while others scoff. I have friends, but others put me off. 3. Looking bright and able, that’s my plan. Taking ESOL classes when I can. Learning English is no easy chore, And I want my folks here, that’s for sure. And I want my folks here, that’s for sure. Oh, yeah!

Long Road to Georgia is a simple trad jazz tune, written at a time when I felt a longing to be back home (which isn't Georgia, that just had a better ring to it than my actual home).Do check out the recording for a mock-up rendition. The strings are improvised and aren't necessary, but make the song sound a bit sweeter. The last play-through of the tune in the recording is done with other instruments improvising around the tune for a proper Dixieland feel. I wholeheartedly recommend this - it adds so much to the overall feel if you've got other instruments noodling around. The slow, simple chord progression makes this a really good tune for people who are newer to jazz & improvisation.

Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities. It is in ternary form in concert E flat major and in 12/8 time with a sax lead and a impro solo written out, although this, as in other areas, can be replaced by own solos. The piano part also has chords included to give flexibility- or to use other keys/rhodes, synth etc. An additional chord chart with top line part has also been included so the piece can be expanded to use other concert instruments like rhythm guitar. The full score is 16 pages (without the D.S.) and is 6 mins long. Set to advanced intermediate level, but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.Price is for full score and all parts.

Uxmal At Midnight is a slow tango. The tune is fairly simple however it has a beauty that invokes images and feelings of this magical place. This is one of my minimalist pieces. There are times when I use extended forms and times when I need only a few measures to convey a particular mood. The essential features of this piece are its simplicity, harmonic color, and use of space. The one exception to its simplicity is the shifting time. Like other pieces of mine that use shifting time, this music has a fluid movement -- with time expanding and contracting in ways that feel natural to me. For contrast, I decided to have the solo section entirely in 4/4. My minimalist pieces, and others that have a great amount of freedom, are heavily dependent upon the performers to bring the music to life. The first A section is 11 bars (repeated), the B section is 4 bars, and the last A section is 7 bars. The entire form is 33 bars. The bridge goes into a slower tempo and is to be played freely. The last A section was truncated, from 11 bars to 7, to have a lead-in for the soloist that suddenly comes out of nowhere.
