By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a bossa nova lead sheet with chord symbols and guitar fret boards, for a jazz or Latin ensemble, large or small, and a solo instrument (flute, saxophone, guitar, etc.). So it supports a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations. The audio sample is a jazz bossa nova accompaniment, combined with my tune from Finale PrintMusic - a quartet ensemble. In this particular sample, you'll hear a flute carry the tune.Levantado translates to lifted up, and connotes being cheered up or advanced in some way. This tune would serve well at a graduation party. Many bossa novas are in minor keys and convey sadness or melancholy. Levantado is not your typical bossa -- you’ll hear major chords and ascending melody motifs, good for a happy occasion. Libertango, by Astor Piazzolla, was my inspiration for this composition, and he is recognized in the subtitle. The basic structure of Levantado is similar to Piazzolla's piece, but the harmonic progressions and melody in Levantado differ from those in Libertango. The chord base notes in my piece often ascend in the progressions, where they descend in Piazzolla's piece. The melody motifs between the two pieces also differ -- gone are Libertango's repeated 7-note figures, and there are reversals or inversions in my piece relative to Piazzolla's other melodic material.

A fun and uplifting Latin piece with a bebop-style melody (not as tricky as it looks!). The chord changes offer plenty of harmonic variety without straying too far from the tonal centre, which should provide a good challenge to newer improvisers and plenty of opportunities for experienced improvisers.The song changes key towards the end, so rhythm section players need to be aware of the turnaround at the end of the song to bring it back to the starting key.Hope you enjoy it!
