Arranged standard wind quintetPeer Gynt, Op. 23, is the incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play of the same name, written by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg in 1875. It premiered along with the play on 24 February 1876 in Christiania (now Oslo).Over a decade after composing the full incidental music for Peer Gynt, Grieg extracted eight movements to make two four-movement suites known as the Peer Gynt Suites Nos 1 and 2.These suites are among his best-known works, however, they initially began as incidental compositions.Suite No. 1, Op. 46 was published in 1888, and Suite No. 2, Op. 55 was published in 1893.A typical rendition of both suites lasts 20 to 35 minutes.Suite No. 1 is better known as it contains  both Morning and The Hall of the Mountain King , but Suite No.2 contains the delightful Solveig's Song which is arranged here.I have arranged all of Suite No.1. William Hershel (1738-1822) is best known for his scientific work including the discovery of infrared radiation, the planet Uranus and several of its moons, among other important discoveries. Born in Hanover into a musical family he spent his early years as a professional musician, composer, and conductor in England. This arrangement for woodwind quintet is based on the delicate slow movement from his orchestral symphony number 20, written in 1763. Hershel's music is described as either late Baroque or pre-classical. This three minute arrangement is well suited for students new to woodwind quintet music as well as for a relaxing interlude as part of a more advanced program.

Edward Alexander MacDowell (December 18, 1860 – January 23, 1908) was an American composer and pianist of the late Romantic period. He was best known for his second piano concerto and his piano suites Woodland Sketches, Sea Pieces and New England Idylls. Woodland Sketches, Op. 51, is a suite of ten short piano pieces . It was written during an 1896 stay at MacDowell's summer retreat in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where each piece was inspired by a different aspect of the surrounding nature and landscapeThe suite's first piece, To a Wild Rose, is MacDowell's best known single work according to the musicologist H. Wiley Hitchcock,and it achieved what Bomberger described as phenomenal popularity. MacDowell believed the work's popularity arose because the publisher spread its score generously across two pages.The piece begins with a spare melody, based on a simple one from the Brotherton Indians.The melody is played in short fragments and accompanied by chords and pedal points. The climax consists of a repeated dominant ninth chord, which can also be heard as a version of the Tristan chord. The piece concludes with a Scotch snap rhythm. Crawford opined that the piece's harmony saves it from blandness.Arranged for wind quintet…It could have been written for wind quintet!Other pieces are available.

It is suitable for young players who are enjoy ensemble playing. Sax 4 is slightly easier, but the other parts are of equal difficulty, and the work is shared around so that everyone gets to play the tune and also be the goblins and trolls. Nobody has to play the quaver passages alone, so this arrangement is a good confidence builder.It is a good introduction to playing in an ensemble whilst maintaining a constant accelerando without getting out of control.
