Hayu Leilot (There were nights) was written by Mordecai Zeira in 1938 to a poem by Yaakov Orland. Though this song is little known outside of Israel today, it is one of my favorites, and I hope will become one of yours as well.I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Bach's work, The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 are here arranged for Woodwind Quintet.Originally written for Johann Gottlieg Goldberg, the Goldberg Variations were originally published in 1741 and may have been initially performed publically by Herr Gottlieb.This work consists of an Aria and 30 variations. I have included in this effort the Aria and Variations 1 through 5. I will publish therest of the variations at a later date. I think it sounds rather interesting for this ensemble and I hope you enjoy playing it.The cover portrait, as you may have noticed, is not of either Bach or Goldberg. It is, rather, of a little known younger brother of Johann Sebastian named Robert Feliux Bach. Darrell Harrison Goforth #5018999. Published by Darrell Harrison Goforth (A0.747424). At the age of 16, young Wolfgang was being dragged from Salzburg to Italy by his father, hoping to learn Italian opera. While in Italy, Mozart took a few minutes to write this little Divertimento. It is light and entertaining and, overall, fun to play. It does seem a little heavy on repeats, but I will leave it up to the performer as to whether to use them or not.

This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Woodwind Quintet consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon. The Flute, Oboe and Clarinet play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the French Horn and the Bassoon. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (27 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Hauntingly beautiful is how the Recordare from Mozart's Requiem is often described. Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Bb Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon, and would be a wonderful addition to any music library. This arrangement will provide students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long, sustained phrases, and also to give them the chance to play this beautiful composition, something which they may not have had the opportunity to do, otherwise. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this arrangement. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (25 pages). The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed the Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Recordare is considered by many people to be one of the most beautiful compositions in Mozart's entire catalogue. Regis Bookshar, a trumpet player, has performed the Requiem in concert with a full orchestra, soloists and a chorus and felt that other musicians should have the opportunity to play the hauntingly beautiful Recordare as well. So, in addition to this arrangement for a Woodwind Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this beautiful composition. There are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may fine something else which may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. Bach’s Italian Concerto BWV 971 was composed for a two manual harpsichord and was first published in 1735.The style is that of the Italian concerto grosso and clearly reflects Bach’s great admiration of the works of Antonio Vivaldi which he had studied extensively. The ritornello style opening and closing movements are lively and joyful enclosing the arioso style Andante of great melancholy beauty. In arranging the Andante I have shared the long melodic line between the five players which will require some careful blending of tone and tuning as the melody passes from player to player. The effect intended is that of a sympathetic conversation between good friends.Players of advanced intermediate standard standard will, I hope, enjoy the challenge of this arrangement of this amazing music.

It was probably written in 1707 when he was 22 years old. It is a Chorale Cantata, a style in which both the text and music are based on a hymn. In this instance, the source was Martin Luther's hymn of the same name which became a main Easter hymn in German Lutheranism.Regis Bookshar has transcribed and arranged three selections based on this hymn tune, two from Bach's Cantata No.  4, BMV  4, and also his Chorale Prelude, BMV 625. They may be played individually or as a trilogy and each movement gets more complex than the previous one. The first selection in this trilogy is the Chorale, Christ lag in Todesbanden, the final chorus from his Cantata No.  4, a straightforward four-part chorale setting of the hymn (Regis has also added a fifth part). This is followed by Bach's Chorale Prelude, BMV 625, a piece from his Orgelbuchlein (Littel Organ Book), a collection of 46 Preludes for organ, written almost exclusively during the 1708-1717 period, while Bach was court organist at Weimar. PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: The woodwind quintet is one of my favorite mediums: the individual personality of each musical instrument on one hand, and the homogeneity that can skilfully be achieved on the other hand, stimulated my imagination for a long time. The titles of the movements represent my own plot thoughts and associations behind each story: The First is a meeting of five friends willing to play together while one of them is being considerably late. The second is my association to a native ceremonial dance. The third, reminds me of a light breeze on a lazy summer night, while sitting on front of the porch. The fourth describes a person gazing at the fire flames, controlled like a marionette by the wind. The fifth is a sinking / floating memory, and last, a discussion about how a fugue should sound. Nevertheless, this is only my view of the music. I would like to invite the listeners to find their own association, and create their individual stories.MOVEMENTS: 1. The Meeting2. Native Dance3. After hearing a CD of Georg Zamfir, the Romanian Pan Pipe virtuoso, playing these traditional melodies, I arranged them for Wind Quintet, adding countermelodies & harmonies to make them work for 5 players.These melodies are really delightful, exciting & uplifting.    If the individual parts do not appear, email lizsharmamusic@gmail.com & they will be sent by return.Unfortunately the only MP3 I can find at present is a version I made for oboe & strings, but at least you can hear the music, which I'm sure you'll enjoy.

I got my inspiration to write it from the landscape of Bohuslän, with it´s bare cliffs , lovely sunsets. and a sea with lots of ilands.I hope you will find this work inspiring. Generally the work is a little above medium difficulty. Im always ready to dicuss improvement of the notation and ranges if you fid some parts hard to play.
