Living near the ocean has inspired me to include a great deal of ocean imagery in this composition. Rolling rhythms in 6/8 meter are reminiscent of the flowing movements of the sea. Shimmering sun on water is suggested by high-pitched woodwind figures. The ebb and flow of the sea is brought to mind by rising and falling musical phrase. The second section is a playful dance written in 7/8 meter. All the instruments get a chance to play the uplifting melody.

Flégier is principally known as havng composed the famous song for bass and orchestra “Le Corâ€, but he also wronte more than 300 works for piano, (including a concerto), many songs, an opéra-comique “Fatima, the oratorio Ossian and many chamber works, including the first “dixtuor†for wind quintet and string quintet. It will work equally well on a concert program, or as music for background gigs like cocktail parties and weddings. Though not challenging from a technical point of view, your quintet will be challenged with breath control and developing exquisite phrasing. The arranger is an oboist who has decades of experience playing in quintets, so while there may be things that appear to violate the conventional wisdom of orchestration, rest assured that they will work in the quintet setting!

(Alt Horn in F provided) The Wind Trio for two Oboes and English Horn in C major, Op. 87 is a trio composition by Ludwig van Beethoven written in 1794, shortly after he arrived Vienna. Because amateur performers would gather in unusual permutations of players, this Trio was quickly arranged for many other combinations of instruments: versions exist for two violins and bass line, two flutes and viola, two clarinets and bassoon, as a sonata for violin and piano, and in various piano settings. In 1806, Beethoven approved an arrangement (not by him) for two violins and viola, which was published that year. It was assigned the misleadingly-high opus number of 87, which would seem to place it near the Seventh Symphony; in fact, this music was written before Beethoven had published his Opus 1. I have now arranged all the movements for wind quintet.

This early symphony (No. 8) was composed in 1761, the last of a set of three - 'Le Matin', 'La Midi' and 'Le Soir' (Morning, Mid day & Evening). The scoring was similar to the Bach Brandenburg concertos in that the wind players (flute, 2 oboes, bassoon & 2 horns) were treated as soloists along with the leaders of the string sections - except the violas. The musical style however, was remarkably well along the road to Haydn's Classical style. The four movements, Allegro molto, Andante,Menuetto & Trio and La tempesta - Presto which represents a storm. Haydn must have been very pleased with the last movement as he used the broken chord theme which first appears in the flute in his final work, The Seasons, again to represent a storm.The arrangement provides rewarding parts for a quintet of players of advanced intermediate standard and above.

Originally written for an octet of 3 wind: clt, Hn & Bsn, and 5 strings: 2 Vlns, viola, cello and bass, this is a tricky piece to arrange for a standard wind octet. I have left the three original wind parts mostly unchanged, with some additional notes as required. I have simplified the string parts in places, making them more playable by the wind player: I have not simply allocated the 5 string parts to the 5 wind players. The second horn part is used for the low sustained notes originally played by the double bass. I have had to utilize notes not in the horns harmonic series, unlike horn 1.
