Score and parts. 37 pages. JB Linear #4970103. Published by JB Linear (A0.582096). Ottorino Respighi's Adoration of the Magi from Three Botticelli Pictures set for WOODWIND QUINTET by John Gibson. Respighi composed the Trittico in 1927 in a three movement setting of musical impressions of paintings by Botticelli. The middle movement, Adoration of the Magi makes use of the ancient Christmas season hymn, O Come, O Come, Emanuel. This setting for woodwind quintet is for flute, oboe, clarinet in A (with an alternate Bb part provided), F Horn, and bassoon. In my opinion this is suitable for advanced players, due to the depth of the music as well as challenging key signatures and instrument ranges, especially for the bassoon. I kept the key relationships the same as in the original orchestration. In the original the clarinet switches from A clarinet to Bb clarinet, and I eliminated that but have provided an optional Bb part if desired.   The short audio sample begins on page 3 of the score.

La plus que lente, L. 121 The more than slow), is a waltz for solo piano written by Claude Debussy in 1910, shortly after his publication of the Préludes, Book I.The piece debuted at the New Carlton Hotel in Paris, where it was transcribed for strings and performed by the popular 'gipsy' violinist, Léoni, for whom Debussy wrote it (and who was given the manuscript by the composer).Despite its title, La plus que lente was not meant to be played slowly; lente, in this context, refers to the valse lente genre that Debussy attempted to emulate.Typical of Debussy's caustic approach to naming his compositions, it represented his reaction to the vast influence of the slow waltz in France's social atmospheres. However, as Frank Howes noted, La plus que lente is, in Debussy's wryly humorous way, the valse lente [slow waltz] to outdo all others.The work is marked Molto rubato con morbidezza, indicating Debussy's encouragement of a flexible tempo.Arranged for standard wind quintet.

It consist of 3 parts, 3 Stasis, according to the traditional ritual. The unaccompanied monologues of the 1st Stasis lead to the virtuosic dialogues of the 2nd and to the general fortissimo tutti of the 3d. The work has a version with narration on the prototype text of the traditional ritual. It was written on November 2009 for the Q innegal Wind Quintet which gave the premier at the German Evangelic Church in Athens next year and is dedicated to composer’s stepmother, Eleni, who died after the completion of the work. Day Dreams is a collection of six solo piano miniatures the young Arthur Sullivan published in 1867. The pieces amply demonstrate a natural melodic gift that would reach full fruition in the enduring comic operas Sullivan wrote with W.S. Gilbert. This is a contrasting pair of Daydreams, numbers 2 and 6, arranged for woodwind quintet. The first Daydream, Robert and Clara, is an expressive cantabile aria that evokes the music of Robert Schumann. The oboe, clarinet, and horn sing the complete melody, but everyone gets at least a fragment of it. (This selection is great for weddings and church services as well as for the concert hall.) The second, À l'Hongroise, is the flashy finale of the Day Dreams collection. It's a spirited Hungarian-inspired dance with a chromatic melody in shifting tonality, with harmonic turns audacious enough to thrill even 21st century listeners, culminating in a wide-ranging arpeggio passage for the four woodwinds. Originally for chamber orchestra, Oot-kwa-tah is dedicated to SUNY Schenectady County Community College on the forty-fifth anniversary of the college’s establishment as part of the State University of New York. The college sits on land that was once part of the Mohawk nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. Oot-kwa-tah is inspired by the Iroquois legend of M45, the Pleiades star cluster. The Iroquois tell a story about seven children who met each day and danced for hours at a time instead of doing chores. An old man appeared to them one day as they danced. He shone magnificently like silver and was clad from head to toe in brilliant white feathers. The old man warned them to stop dancing lest something terrible happen to them. Ignoring the old man’s warning and growing more and more hungry and lightheaded the children began to rise into the air. If only they had listened to me, the old man thought. As the children’s parents gathered, one little boy heard his father’s voice below. The little boy looked down and saw his father. At that instant he fell back to earth. The other children continued to float higher and higher into the sky to become the Pleiades star cluster. The Iroquois call them Oot-kwa-tah and are reminded of these reckless children each time they see a falling star. Duration: 5:00

The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux) is a humorous musical suite of fourteen movements by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The work was written for private performance by an ad hoc ensemble of two pianos and other instruments, and the complete work lasts around 25 minutes.
