This unstable, suspenseful work details the the prophesied disastrous signs that will precede Christ's Second Coming through the use of asymetrical time signatures, whereas Christ's depicted descent from the heavens is the only part of the piece in 4/4, arguably the most comforting time signature. In fact, the title, Signs of the Times, is actually a play on words of the term time signatures, which is the main gimmick of the piece. The subtitle of the piece is (Matthew 24:29-30) which reads:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.This piece was originally performed by the Wind Quintet at Brigham Young University-Idaho during the Fall 2023 semester, and has since been polished.Estimated duration of piece: 5 min, 55 secondsEmail me for the sheet music for the individual parts, or let me know if you're going to perform this piece!ryansterry2000@gmail.com.

Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553634). Weihnachtsbaum (English: Christmas Tree; French: Arbre de Noel) is a suite of 12 pieces written by Franz Liszt in 1873–76, with revisions in 1881. The suite exists in versions for solo piano and piano four-hands. Weihnachtsbaum does not demand great virtuosity, and it has been described as a distant relation of Schumann’s Kinderszenen and Debussy’s Children’s Corner. It occupies an unusual place in Liszt’s output, and it may be for these reasons that it has received relatively little attention from performers. Liszt dedicated Weihnachtsbaum to his first grandchild Daniela von Bülow (1860-1940; daughter of Cosima and Hans von Bülow). Daniela had accompanied her grandfather to Rome due to his frail condition. The first performance was on Christmas Day 1881 in Daniela’s Rome hotel room. This was the day on which her mother Cosima always celebrated her birthday, although she was actually born on Christmas Eve.This is No 4. This is a brand new, original piece for wind quintet.I decided that I wanted to create a musical description of summer under lockdown, spending time in the garden (although there are no bird sounds) in the NorthWest of England. The weather here is usually very changeable (it's why we talk about it so much) so, of course, I included a thunderstorm in the middle!The piece opens with a gentle walk in the garden, (bassoon) the beautiful flowers swaying in the slight breeze (clarinet and horn). The oboe melody that enters in bar two expresses my thoughts of delight at the beautiful scene. The melody is passed around the ensemble, there's a duet with the flute and then the bassoon takes charge, with the horn taking over the walking bassline.At letter C there's an abrupt change of scene as I notice the bees busily flitting from flower to flower, pollenating and collecting nectar. The instruments play flutter-tongue to imitate an annoyed buzz every now and again as bees from different hives chance upon the same flower, but all remains peacefully business-like.At Letter D, we have a slight slowing of tempo as some butterflies flit from place to place, aimlessly taking off and landing fluttering for a short while in the sunshine. This section is as carefree as possible and should just amble along. The tempo can be pulled about quite a bit.At Letter F, there's a huge, sudden thunderstorm, jagged lightning and rolling thunder as a downpour drenches the garden. Just as suddenly as it started, the storm ends and rain reduces to a thin drizzle. Out comes the sun and we continue through the garden into the distance.

An arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a very early wind quintet written by Edward Elgar while still based in Worcester in 1878-9, entitled Harmony Music No.1, after the German Harmoniemusik, meaning music for wind instruments. His quintet group (in which he played the bassoon) consisted of two flutes, an oboe, a clarinet and a bassoon, which by modern standards is rather unusual (omitting the usual French horn). He agreed to write a quintet for the group once a week, and he claimed to have written most of them during the 25-minute sermons at St. George's R.C. Church, where he had taken over the organ-playing from his father (and where the arranger ministered for three years in the 1990s!) It is a wonderful, cheerful, tuneful short piece (4-5 minutes long), but the original version is rarely performed, perhaps because of its difficulty on several fronts. First it is very fast, challenging performers' ability to tongue rapidly. Secondly, it repeatedly leaves no time to breathe, especially for the flautists (meaning that it has to be performed even faster, in order to get through it.) Thirdly, Elgar's oboist must have been extremely versatile, as its part is very low indeed in places (several low B's played pp at speed.) Finally, published copies seem to have rather a lot of editorial errors... This arrangement was therefore created in the hope that the piece might become more accessible and be more frequently performed. Although the bassoon part remains Elgar's, the other four players are used imaginatively to overcome many of the difficulties of the original. For example, the original low oboe parts are here played by one of the clarinets instead, and the severe breathing problems are solved by sharing repeated quavers between the four higher instruments.

Published by NoteForge (A0.1448781). Course of Empire takes its title and theme from a series of paintings by Thomas Cole. Over the course of these five paintings, an imaginary city rises and falls. A large boulder atop a cliff watches the scenes unfold: a wild and untamed landscape in the first painting; an agrarian, peaceful, arcadian state in the second; a decadent celebration in the third; the sack and destruction of the city in the fourth; and the ruins in the last.I tried to work unifying musical motives throughout the quintet. The first movement, The State of Nature, begins with a twelve-tone texture. There is no sense of tonal hierarchy or pitch center. The music is in a state of balance, adhering to a natural system not discernable to the listener. The bassoon introduces the main motive representing the cliff, a pastoral sort of hiccup.The second movement, Daydreams of Arcadia, begins with and develops the cliff motive, and has a more defined tonality. There is more action throughout the movement, as we’re led to the peaceful beginnings of civilization. The Empire motive, a series of syncopated chords, shows up toward the end of the movement: This is the beginning of the end, where our imaginary city makes the change from existing in harmony with nature to conquering it.The third movement, Fulfillment of Empire, begins with a cliff motive that has been added to, almost to the point of unrecognizability. Scenes of empire are shown musically, from a grand parade, to a show of naval forces, to the temple that occupies most of the painting. The Empire theme returns, expanded upon, but somehow sounding a little overextended.The fourth movement, The Fall, alternates between unfriendly chords (and noises) and the Empire motive. Every iteration of the Empire motive gets a little weaker, as the foundations of the civilization are destroyed. The movement ends with a lone flute.Movement five, Redemption, features some scenes that are familiar, but are now in ruins. The movement slips slowly back into the twelve-tone texture from the beginning. The Empire motive, or something like it, makes a brief appearance and passes through the ensemble, starting in the upper voices and sinking into the lower.

One of the most beautiful, fully romantic works for mixed chamber ensemble (oboe, horn and piano), Carl Reinecke’s Trio in A minor op. 188 is here arranged for woodwind quintet. The oboe and horn parts are the same as the original (with an attempt at unifying articulation and dynamics), while the rest of the quintet covers the piano part. This works surprisingly well, with the result sounding as if it had always been conceived for this combination (well… almost – the flute part gets a thorough workout in the low range which is not entirely characteristic). Featuring oboe and horn, but giving every instrument plenty to do and moments to shine, this is a fantastic addition to the romantic woodwind quintet repertoire – which, besides the usual suspects, is surprisingly scarce. The level of difficulty is just above advanced intermediate – the low flute part, some tricky rhythmic passages (especially for the clarinet) and overall ensemble considerations make this a challenge, but a very, very rewarding one, for an advanced quintet.
