Edward Alexander MacDowell (December 18, 1860 – January 23, 1908) was an American composer and pianist of the late Romantic period. He was best known for his second piano concerto and his piano suites Woodland Sketches, Sea Pieces and New England Idylls. Woodland Sketches, Op. 51, is a suite of ten short piano pieces . It was written during an 1896 stay at MacDowell's summer retreat in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where each piece was inspired by a different aspect of the surrounding nature and landscapeThe suite's first piece, To a Wild Rose, is MacDowell's best known single work according to the musicologist H. Wiley Hitchcock,and it achieved what Bomberger described as phenomenal popularity. MacDowell believed the work's popularity arose because the publisher spread its score generously across two pages.The piece begins with a spare melody, based on a simple one from the Brotherton Indians.The melody is played in short fragments and accompanied by chords and pedal points. The climax consists of a repeated dominant ninth chord, which can also be heard as a version of the Tristan chord. The piece concludes with a Scotch snap rhythm. Crawford opined that the piece's harmony saves it from blandness.Arranged for wind quintet…It could have been written for wind quintet!Other pieces are available.

This woodwind quintet arrangement opens with oboe in a minor key followed by the melody, requiring some fast keywork on the part of the oboist. A pretty flute accompaniment adds an airy feel to the oboe line. In the second section the flute performs a series of runs, and is answered by the clarinet and horn. A trio section pairs flute with horn and clarinet with bassoon. The piece concludes with a return to the second section. He began his musical career as a chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music. After graduation, Stainer was appointed organist at St. Michael's College, Tenbury, and later at Magdalen College, Oxford. He also served as the Professor of Music at Oxford University from 1889 until his death.Stainer was a prolific composer who wrote in a variety of genres. He is perhaps best known for his oratorio The Crucifixion, which is still performed regularly today. Stainer's other works include church music, hymns, anthems, and organ music. He was praised for his skillful use of harmony and counterpoint and was considered one of the most important composers of his time.In addition to his work as a composer and organist, Stainer was a respected music educator. He helped establish the Royal College of Music in London and wrote several influential music textbooks. Stainer passed away on March 31, 1901, but his legacy as a composer, performer, and music educator continues to inspire musicians around the world today.

Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, 1st Baronet (27 February 1848 – 7 October 1918) was an English composer, teacher and historian of music.Parry's first major works appeared in 1880. Parry patterned the work on the early classical orchestral suite of dance movements, and the six movements all demonstrate the influence of antiquity. Closely related to the Norse tradition of boar sacrifice to their goddess Freyja during the feast of Winter Solstice, this song originated from an urban legend in Queen's College, Oxford back in the 15th century which tells of how a scholar from Queen’s College managed to kill an attacking boar and offered it at dinner.The song was first published in English during the 1520’s in a book entitled Christmase Carolles Newly Emprynted at London in the flete street, which was written by Jan van Wynken de Worde. Total duration ca. 6'30The Pastorale & Burlesque was premiered April 28, 1955, in a concert at Frasier Hall, Greeley, Colorado, sponsored by Phi Mu Alpha and the Colorado State College of Education, Division of Music, by William Hill, flute, Kenneth Evans, oboe, Richard Jacobs, clarinet, William Gower, bassoon, James Miller, horn, and the composer on piano. The program notes from the premiere read: The pastorale, suggesting as it does the music of shepherds and their pipes, is well suited to woodwind instruments. Mr. Dykins has introduced a lively scherzo as a center section to his pastorale to afford contrast to the somewhat melancholy first and last parts of the movement. A burlesque (also burla, burlesca or burletta) is a composition in a jesting mood.
