Anton (AntonÃn, Antoine) Joseph Reicha (Rejcha) (26 February 1770 – 28 May 1836) was a Czech-born, Bavarian-educated, later naturalized French composer and music theorist. A contemporary and lifelong friend of Beethoven, he is now best remembered for his substantial early contributions to the wind quintet literature and his role as teacher of pupils including Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz and César Franck.Reicha's 25 wind quintets, composed in Paris between 1811 and 1820, were mostly premiered from 1817 in the foyer of the Théâtre Favart by some of the world's fifinest wind soloists. They were well received and were played al over Europe shortly afterward.Reicha claimed in his memoirs that his wind quintets filed a void:At that time, there was a dearth not only of good classic[al] music, but of any good music at al for wind instruments, simply because the composers knew little of their technique.[Wikipedia]Notes concerning this editionIn preparing this edition various manuscripts were consulted including the facimilies held by the IMSLP and Clarinet Institute. Arranged wind quintet Horn in Bb basso (alt hn in F) The six Kinderstücke, Op 72, along with the separate Andante in E flat major and Sostenuto in F major, were written in 1842 for the children of F W Benecke, a London wool merchant who was the uncle of Mendelssohn’s wife, Cécile (née Jeanrenaud). Exhibiting distinctive characteristics of the Lieder ohne Worte (treble song-like melodies and ternary ABA forms, for example), these pieces belong as well to the category of children’s music, in the tradition, say, of Schumann’s Klavieralbum für die Jugend and Bizet’s later Jeux d’enfants, and evince a naive innocence reflective of their intended audience. Of the eight, Mendelssohn ultimately chose six to shape into Op 72, the last work he saw through the press. It appeared in December 1847, one month after his death, and in England with the designation of ‘Christmas pieces’. This is my arrangement of No.5 Allegro assai.

This early symphony (No. 8) was composed in 1761, the last of a set of three - 'Le Matin', 'La Midi' and 'Le Soir' (Morning, Mid day & Evening). The scoring was similar to the Bach Brandenburg concertos in that the wind players (flute, 2 oboes, bassoon & 2 horns) were treated as soloists along with the leaders of the string sections - except the violas. The musical style however, was remarkably well along the road to Haydn's Classical style. The four movements, Allegro molto, Andante,Menuetto & Trio and La tempesta - Presto which represents a storm. Haydn must have been very pleased with the last movement as he used the broken chord theme which first appears in the flute in his final work, The Seasons, again to represent a storm.The arrangement provides rewarding parts for a quintet of players of advanced intermediate standard and above.

In form these Divertimenti are in three movements, which differs from his later divertimenti which have 4 or more movements. They are sometimes known as Salzburg Symphonies 1 to 3. K. 136, in D major, the best known of the three, opens with an Allegro, followed by an attractive G major slow movement and a rapid finale with the requisite touch of contrapuntal interest. K. 137, in B flat major, starts with an Andante, followed by two faster movements. The third of the set, K. 138, in F major, follows an opening tripartite Allegro with a G major Andante and a final Presto. Arranged wind quintet Natural Horn in Bb ALTO Mozart wrote three early String Quartets in Salzburg in 1772 naming them Divertimenti. They are catalogued as K.136, K.137 and K.138. In form these Divertimenti are in three movements, which differs from his later divertimenti which have 4 or more movements. They are sometimes known as Salzburg Symphonies 1 to 3. K. 136, in D major, the best known of the three, opens with an Allegro, followed by an attractive G major slow movement and a rapid finale with the requisite touch of contrapuntal interest. K. 137, in B flat major, starts with an Andante, followed by two faster movements. The third of the set, K. 138, in F major, follows an opening tripartite Allegro with a C major Andante and a final Presto. This is no. 2 Arranged wind quintet. The melody is shared out between mainly flute and oboe...I have not done a straight swop from violin 1 to flute etc.... I have created a natural Horn part in Bb alto.
