Although Let It Snow! is regarded as a Christmas song, it was written in July during a heat wave in California where Cahn and Styne were working at the time; wishing for cooler temperatures. It has been recorded many times over the years and is a wintertime staple. This arrangement is in a swing style and liberally uses surprise tonal shifts from one key center to another. It is an intermediate to advanced intermediate level arrangement. All players get a chance at the melody and there is a jazzy oboe solo which can be played as written or improvised (or passed to another player). A nice selection for your winter concert. Wind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Bb Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon)In the Bleak Mid-Winter is a popular Christmas Carol which has been set to music by both Gustav Holst and Harold Darke. This wind quintet arrangement is based on the Holst version and combines the composer's beautifully simple harmony with the arranger's counter-melodies and intricate wind writing. Lovely writing for all instruments. An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with oboe and flute taking turns to play the top line. In verse 2, the French horn presents the tune in a lower register while the bassoon plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The flute,oboe, and clarinet weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns to the flute and oboe with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

This beautiful hymn was first published by John Francis Wade in his collection Cantus Diversi (1751), with four Latin verses, and music set in the traditional square notation used for medieval liturgical music. Besides John Francis Wade, the tune has been attributed to several musicians, from John Reading and his son, to Handel, and even the German composer Gluck. The Portuguese composer Marcos Portugal or King John IV of Portugal have also been credited. Thomas Arne, whom Wade knew, is another possible composer. This is “Silent Midnight Clear a medley of Silent Night and It Came Upon and Midnight Clear from a collection of flex woodwind quintets arranged by Dr. Donald Jay Smith developed over years of teaching secondary school band. The optimal instrumentation is, of course, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and Horn. But, additional parts have been added so that a second clarinet can cover the oboe part or a second oboe can cover the clarinet part (I actually had that problem once-two great oboe players and no clarinet available to cover the part), Bass Clarinet covering Bassoon and a Bb Horn part in case the student only reads that part on the horn or is covered with flugelhorn/baritone or another Bb instrument. The quintets were always performed one per part and the students enjoyed playing this arrangement from 6th grade through high school!

His family moved to Paris, after Metz and part of Lorraine were annexed to Germany in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, gaining first prizes for solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint and fugue. He won the French Prix de Rome in 1882, with his cantata Edith. His teachers included Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, César Franck (for the organ) and Jules Massenet (for composition).He succeeded César Franck as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris from 1890 to 1898. He himself was succeeded by another distinguished Franck pupil, Charles Tournemire. Associated for many years with Édouard Colonne's concert series, the Concerts Colonne, from 1903, Pierné became chief conductor of this series in 1910.His most notable early performance was the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, at the Ballets Russes, Paris, on 25 June 1910. He remained in the post until 1933 (when Paul Paray took over his duties). Lullay, mine liking is a Middle English lyric poem or carol of the 15th century which frames a narrative describing an encounter of the Nativity with a song sung by the Virgin Mary to the infant Christ. The refrain is an early example of an English lullaby; the term lullaby is thought to originate with the lu lu or la la sound made by mothers or nurses to calm children, and by or bye bye, another lulling sound (for example in the similarly ancient Coventry Carol)There are a number of surviving medieval English verses associated with the birth of Jesus which take the form of a lullaby, of which this is probably the most famous example. Written by an anonymous hand, the text is found uniquely in Sloane MS 2593, a collection of medieval lyrics now held in the British Library.My arrangement is transcribed from Gustav Holst's setting of the text, which he calls Lullay, My Liking.It is number 2 from Holst's 4 Carols for Unaccompanied Choir Op.34Arranged wind quintetThe solo verses are played by oboe, flute, clarinet,oboe and bassoon together and finally horn.The refrain has been arranged in a differnt instrumental line up each time it is played.
