Edward Alexander MacDowell (December 18, 1860 – January 23, 1908) was an American composer and pianist of the late Romantic period. He was best known for his second piano concerto and his piano suites Woodland Sketches, Sea Pieces and New England Idylls. Woodland Sketches, Op. 51, is a suite of ten short piano pieces . It was written during an 1896 stay at MacDowell's summer retreat in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where each piece was inspired by a different aspect of the surrounding nature and landscapeThe suite's first piece, To a Wild Rose, is MacDowell's best known single work according to the musicologist H. Wiley Hitchcock,and it achieved what Bomberger described as phenomenal popularity. MacDowell believed the work's popularity arose because the publisher spread its score generously across two pages.The piece begins with a spare melody, based on a simple one from the Brotherton Indians.The melody is played in short fragments and accompanied by chords and pedal points. The climax consists of a repeated dominant ninth chord, which can also be heard as a version of the Tristan chord. The piece concludes with a Scotch snap rhythm. Crawford opined that the piece's harmony saves it from blandness.Arranged for wind quintet…It could have been written for wind quintet!Other pieces are available.

The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux) is a humorous musical suite of fourteen movements by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The work was written for private performance by an ad hoc ensemble of two pianos and other instruments, and lasts around 25 minutes.This is my arrangement for wind quintet of mvt 2 Poules et Coqs (hens and Roosters, or cocks and hens)The original version has Strings without cello and double bass, two pianos, with clarinet: this movement is centered around a pecking theme played in the pianos and strings, which is quite reminiscent of chickens pecking at grain. The clarinet plays a small solo above the strings. The piano plays a very fast theme based on the crowing of a rooster's Cock-a-Doodle-Doo.It is quite short - about 1 min 5 secs

By this time in his career Satie was filling his scores with non-standard performance instructions, satiric barbs and modernist prose, scattered about on a carefully, expertly fashioned musical structure of experimental harmonies, strangely static rhythms, and radically miniaturized forms. In the case of Les Trois Valses Distinguées du Précieux Dégoûté, Maurice Ravel was undoubtedly the target of Satie’s satire. Ravel was the Précieux Dégoûté (a revolting or jaded dandy, a fop), and Satie’s Trois Valses subtly derided Ravel’s popular Valses nobles et sentimentales, composed four years earlier. The Sarabandes also played a key role in Satie's belated discovery by his country's musical establishment in the 1910s, setting the stage for his international notoriety.French composer and critic Alexis Roland-Manuel wrote in 1916 that the Sarabandes represented a milestone in the evolution of our music...pieces of an unprecedented harmonic technique, born of an entirely new aesthetic, which create a unique atmosphere, a sonorous magic of complete originality.The sarabande is a dance in triple meter that originated in the Spanish colonies of Central America in the mid-1500s. It had migrated to Europe by the 17th Century, where in France it became a popular slow court dance. Every piano player would most probably be familiar with this piece, but not necessarily wind players. However, with this arrangement for Wind Quintet, the expressive voices of this piano piece are further explored by the colours of the Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn and Bassoon.The opening solo is deliberately given to the flute, paying homage to another iconic piece of Debussy's, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, which opens with a lower register flute solo starting with the same note Db.Conscious decisions were also made to give the phrases in bars 12-13 and 15-16 with larger melodic spreads to the Clarinet, whose expressive qualities across these ranges suit these phrases particularly well.The revisiting of the theme in bar 28, this time in a higher register, was deliberately given to the Oboe and not the flute (not every high register melodies needs to be assigned to the flute). Oboe's higher registers, when played delicately to the point of almost struggling to hang on to the higher notes, suit the sweetness (tre doux) of the solo passage particularly well.Not to forget the characteristic Debussy harmonies that is fully supported and suited to be powered by the French Horn and Bassoon. These lower voices provide the harmonic engine that powers this unmistakable Debussy sound.Truly, this arrangement is a challenge and masterclass in tone colour for the Wind Quintet that demands a simultaneous homogeneity, as well as balance that brings out the Debussy sound, yet allowing each of the characteristics of the Wind instruments to shine through.

Early 20th century Black Canadian-American composer, conductor and pianist Robert Nathaniel Dett's  Two Spirituals: Music in the Mine and Let Us Cheer the Weary Traveler combine his neo-romantic style and advocacy for spirituals in this engaging arrangement for a traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, with alternate parts clarinet in B-flat substitute for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat substitute for horn, and bass clarinet in B-flat substitute for bassoon. Music in the Mine provides a musical interpretation of the back-breaking and mind-numbing mining work in the steady accompaniment along with the dialogue of two miners yearning for better days, while Let Us Cheer the Weary Travelers is an upbeat dedication to our spiritual journey.  As Director of the Hampton Institute, Dett developed the college's choir with his compositions and conducting into one of the leading choirs in the nation. Dett studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and awarded an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music .
