A lovely quartet for flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, and bassoon written in the style of Renaissance counterpoint. 3 page score (1 page parts), about 2 minutes in duration.  This was written while I was studying 16th Century counterpoint, and I thought it was so nice I arranged it for woodwind quartet. Do to the nature of the style, each part has only about an octave range, there's only a few accidentals, and the rhythms aren't too complicated. The main challenges for the less advanced musician would be the slow pace in 4/2 time and the long flowing phrases.

Healy WILLAN Chaconne 1957 (from Rondino,Elegy & Chaconne, for Organ)Composer of over 800 works and teacher of over 50 years, Mr.Willan used to be known as the Dean of Canadian Composers and was a fixture of the Toronto music scene for a very long while. Apparently he wrote Operas and Symphonies as well, but these have not been easily available to experience. Perhaps this is just Canadian natural reticence or 'reserve'. However, it's a characteristic that is not conducive to cultivating popularity (needless to say). Nevertheless, Willan's music is simply lovely, and it's nice to know that, if you 'cotton on' to it, you will probably never exhaust the supply.Rondino & Elegy arrangements to follow soon.

Although Let It Snow! is regarded as a Christmas song, it was written in July during a heat wave in California where Cahn and Styne were working at the time; wishing for cooler temperatures. It has been recorded many times over the years and is a wintertime staple. This arrangement is in a swing style and liberally uses surprise tonal shifts from one key center to another. It is an intermediate to advanced intermediate level arrangement. All players get a chance at the melody and there is a jazzy oboe solo which can be played as written or improvised (or passed to another player). A nice selection for your winter concert. I said to Nancy, I should write a piece for that group. She said that was a good idea. I soon discovered that the name of the group is La Rondine, or the swallow. I then remembered that Puccini wrote an opera called La Rondine. So I told Nancy that I might do a little research on the Puccini opera and come up with a piece inspired by thematic snippets I found in the opera. Well, I did not find Puccini’s music that conducive to a transformation into TOL music. Around the same time, I stumbled upon a 27-CD box set of nine operas by the Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi. As I was listening to these obscure operas by Vivaldi it dawned on me that I was very attracted to what I was hearing, and it was seeping into my musical thinking in the most natural way imaginable. Very quickly I was hearing things for this work I planned to write for Nancy’s group, and the music just moved along quite smoothly from one movement into another. At the same time I began reading about Vivaldi and his life as a priest, violinist, teacher, impresario, and composer in the city of Venice and other cities nearby. What a fascinating life he led!!! I also discovered in my reading that the city of Venice at that time was called La Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia. So, instead of a serenade for ten instruments, my work for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons, is called La Serenissima as an homage to Antonio Vivaldi and that glorious city of Venice. Full disclosure: This work is frankly atonal. Rhythms are tricky. Harmonies are unconventional to say the least. And even the form is nicely aberrant.Yet something magical happens when writing for winds: because of the weak timbre contact between the different instruments, one can write complex textures without losing clarity. One can write dissonant harmonies without having them sound harsh and grating. In fact, there are moments of surprising beauty here. Take for instance the color canons, passages combining all instruments in clusters whose harmonic and rhythmic motion is essentially static, but which shimmer with ever-changing timbres. The title translates - inexactly - to Keeper of Heaven, or Starry Watchman, or Celestial Caretaker, and refers to an imaginary character whose task it is to walk about the heavens at sunset and turn on the stars. He is the galactic equivalent of the old gentlemen who once went about Victorian streets, lighting the gas lamps and generally keeping an eye on things, making sure that all is well. I do not claim that this character is God the Father Almighty, only that he is an old gentleman. But there might very well be something wizard-ish about him!Performance time is approximately seven and a half minutes. The audio excerpt included here is of the last two minutes, where the music comes the closest to being tonal.
