Published by Stephanie Daige (A0.796886). This Fantasia in D Minor, K. 397, really shows off Mozart's dramatic side. My arrangement of this Fantasy, one of Mozart's most popular piano pieces, gives each instrument the opportunity to play a different character. Fantasia in D Minor opens with somber arpeggios in the bassoon, and then goes to a pleading melody that goes back and forth between the flute and the oboe. The tension builds up until the clarinet breaks out into a wild cadenza. The pleading melodies and wild cadenzas go back and forth a few more times building tension until the final segment, which resolves with a bright, cheerful song-like melody in the horn. Duration is approximately 6 minutes.I had a great time arranging this piece, and I hope you will enjoy playing it. It presents some unique challenges and expressive opportunities, and it is a real crowd-pleaser.

Wind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon) On the Trail is the third movement from Ferde Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite, written between 1929 and 1931; published in 1932. It has since become one of the most popular American musical works of the twentieth century, with On the Trail being the most well-known movement. It portrays a cowboy and his burro (donkey) sauntering through the Grand Canyon, coming across an oasis and a lonely cabin where they hear a music box playing, before continuing their journey. All this is portrayed in the music, including the braying sound of the donkey, its clip-clopping along and the cowboy singing a relaxed Western style song.This lovely and fun arrangement for wind quintet remains faithful to the original; retaining its structure, key and, where possible, its instrumentation. The only section omitted is the violin cadenza. The original orchestral work includes clarinets in Bb. This arrangement is also written for Bb clarinet but an alternative clarinet in A part is included, which is more suited to the key of the work.This is an ideal recital piece for either formal or informal concert settings. William Henry Fry was an American composer and music critic who was one of the few American composers writing large works for orchestra at the time of his Santa Claus piece in 1853. He was also one of the first to use a saxophone in a symphony orchestra, the instrument having been invented just a few years previously.
