Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891946). This piece by John Coltrane was recorded in 1960 on Atlantic Records, but was only released 10 years later on the album 'The Coltrane Legacy'. Coltrane based 26-2 on Charlie Parkers 'Confirmation', but altered it slightly using his famous 'Coltrane Changes' system of over writing the melody and harmonies. Scored for 5 Saxophones, this is not for the faint-hearted!! But should engender some focused practice sessions! Incidentally, 26-2 was originally an untitled track on the 1960 album, Trane brought it into the studio at the last minute, and after 26 takes on day 2 it was labelled as such by the producer, 26-2, and the name just seemed to stick!Full recorded MP3 on this site too.

The horn part is written for a natural horn in F. I have arranged this as though Beethoven had written it for wind quintet, and have made some changes/additions to chords and quaver passges, rather than simply transcribing the piano score note for note. I have also set my tempo at crotchet =100 , which is slow for an Allegro, but it seems to work.

With concerts and memorial performances in mind, this arrangement is popular with players and audiences alike. After an expressive opening, the melody moves around the ensemble, exploiting interesting changes in time signature and texture, gradually leading to a final climax and closing flourish. The difficulty level is about ABRSM grade 5-6. The PDF is 11 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a full score and parts for Alto 1 & 2, Tenor 1 & 2, Baritone and Timpani. The timpani part is desirable for some added gravitas but not essential. The duration of the piece is 2 minutes 50 seconds. Please note that versions of this arrangement are also available for brass band, brass and wind quintets.

The Chaconne was composed for organ but not published during Johann Pachelbel’s lifetime. First Publication was in 1901 by Breitkopf und Härtel. The four bar/measure theme is repeated as are all 25 variations. In almost every instance the repeat would have been more elaborate or played in a different register on the organ.In arranging the Chaconne for wind players I have used the different characteristics of the wind instruments in varying combinations and changes of register to create what I hope is an enjoyable and entertaining concert piece for players of advanced intermediate standard. The three part writing has been expanded to the five instruments of the standard woodwind quintet to give a wider scope for variation of scoring which also enables the players some breathing space.The dynamic markings are editorial so do feel free to use your own.

Capriccio may be thought of whimsically, as a fantasy, while Ballata can be treated as a dance. Additionally these two ideas may constantly interact as each movement contains traces of the other. As this music is not programmatic in nature, no specific imagery must necessarily be sought after, but rather the material can be woven as the performers see fit within the tempo and dynamic guidelines. Sensitivity should be paid to the note-value relationships present within many tempo changes, as well as hemioli and other perceived metric shifts. Finally, performers are encouraged to explore the full range of textural colors present as this will accentuate the development of these ideas.
