Faure’s piano duet entitled Dolly Suite is here arranged by Philip Le Bas for a wind sextet, consisting of a standard wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon) plus bass clarinet. The bass clarinet gives the music more sonority and it allows the arranger more opportunity to bring out Faure’s sumptuous harmonies. Dolly was the nickname of the baby daughter of Emma Bardac, with whom Faure had a long-running affair, and each of the pieces has a slightly different association with childhood.1) The Berceuse (lullaby) is best remembered as the theme tune to the BBC’s Listen with Mother, and its tune is indelibly marked into the memories of generations of radio listeners between 1950 and 1982. It was written for Dolly’s first birthday. (An alternative part for clarinet in A is available for this movement, to avoid the otherwise slightly tricky key signature of F sharp major!)2) Mi-a-ou has nothing to do with cats, but is a version of Dolly’s first attempts to pronounce the name of her brother Raoul. Written for her second birthday, it is a delicate and playful scherzo with lots of cross-rhythms for the instruments.3) Le Jardin de Dolly is regarded by some as the best piece in the collection, with its gorgeous tune and unexpected harmonies, creating an impressionistic picture of a beautiful, peaceful French garden.4) Kitty-Valse again has nothing to do with cats but with the family dog Ketty, who whirls round and round, in unrelenting cheerfulness.5) In Tendresse Faure introduces more chromatic harmonies, used in his later works. As its name and its key of D flat suggests, the music here seems to express deep and shifting emotions associated with intimate relationships, while retaining a sense of calm and comfort throughout.6) The last piece, Le Pas Espagnole is a thrilling journey across the border into the exotic Spanish world of dance. There is much in common with Chabrier’s Espana, and here the wind players can enjoy playing at full tilt in an exciting and tuneful end to the suite.

This is a Woodwind Quintet arrangement, by Joseph Pugh of the Overture at the beginning of The Messiah, an English-language oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel, with a scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible, and from the Coverdale Psalter, the version of the Psalms included with the Book of Common Prayer. It was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742 and received its London premiere nearly a year later.

Steven Mark Kudlo #728747. Published by Steven Mark Kudlo (A0.1128135). Of intermediate difficulty, this work is in six movements at a length of about 15 minutes. It is polystylistic and minimal. It uses repetitive form in a creative way, all based on the form of the first movement. The three styles used are pandiatonic, expressionistic, and common practice harmony within every movement. Every movement ends with concordant passages, which are also interspersed within each movement. The composition could be used to demonstrate these three styles of harmony. There are multiple meters, some of them unusual, like 5/4 or 7/8, and there is usually a meter change within the movements. Each movement has its dominating key, even though the composition is not based on the key system, but instead, something called functional polystylism is used as a substitute for key relations within each movement. The first and second themes are in different styles, even different meters. Overall, the feel is neoclassic. Dynamics range from mp to f, though within each movement instruments may drop out for the sake of contrast.

Arranged wind quintet Mvt III Molto vivace The String Quartet in F major, Op. 96, nicknamed the American Quartet, is the 12th string quartet composed by AntonÃn Dvořák. It was written in 1893, during Dvořák's time in the United States of America. The quartet is one of the most popular in the chamber music repertoire. For the London premiere of his New World symphony, Dvořák wrote: As to my opinion I think that the influence of this country (it means the folk songs)) is to be seen, and that this and all other works (written in America) differ very much from my other works as well as in colour as in character,. A characteristic, unifying element throughout the quartet is the use of the pentatonic scale. This scale gives the whole quartet its open, simple character, a character that is frequently identified with American folk music. It was written in 1893, during Dvořák's time in the United States of America. The quartet is one of the most popular in the chamber music repertoire. For the London premiere of his New World symphony, Dvořák wrote: As to my opinion I think that the influence of this country (it means the folk songs)) is to be seen, and that this and all other works (written in America) differ very much from my other works as well as in colour as in character,. A characteristic, unifying element throughout the quartet is the use of the pentatonic scale. This scale gives the whole quartet its open, simple character, a character that is frequently identified with American folk music. However, the pentatonic scale is common in many ethnic musics worldwide, and Dvořák had composed pentatonic music, being familiar with such Slavonic folk music examples, before coming to America Specific American influences have been doubted: In fact the only American thing about the work is that it was written there, writes Paul Griffiths.[21] The specific American qualities of the so-called American Quartet are not easily identifiable, writes Lucy Miller, ...Better to look upon the subtitle as simply one assigned because of its composition during Dvořák's American tour. I have NOT simply copied the string parts across to the winds, as other have done. Rather, I have arranged the piece as though it had been written for wind quintet, so have given the horn repeated notes , in the same way as the slow movement of the slow movement Dvorak's wind serenade., and used the horn to sustain. Some of the arpeggio figures remain, but in a simplified form.and are shared between clarinet and bassoon.

This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Woodwind Quintet consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon. The Flute, Oboe and Clarinet play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the French Horn and the Bassoon. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (27 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. Please keep checking because I plan to continue to add new arrangements as often as I can. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon will be a challenge to some performers but will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single.In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse. Also known as Unto us a boy is born Puer nobis nascitur, usually translated as Unto Us Is Born a Son, is a medieval Christmas carol found in a number of manuscript sources—the 14th-century German Moosburg Gradual and a 15th-century Trier manuscript. The book became well known in Britain after a rare original copy of Piae Cantiones owned by Peter of Nyland was given as a gift to the British Minister in Stockholm. He subsequently gave it to John Mason Neale in 1852, and it was from this copy that Neale, in collaboration with Thomas Helmore published songs in two collections in 1853 and 1854 respectively, although this carol was not included in either. The carol became popular as a processional hymn following a translation by George Ratcliffe Woodward first published in 1902.[7] Percy Dearmer also translated the hymn for inclusion in The Oxford Book of Carols (1928) as Unto Us a Boy Is Born.Both translations are commonly used. 5 verses, all differnt instrumentation Arranged standard wind quintet.
