Grainger’s arrangement of the Scottish song The Caledonian Hunt’s Delight became Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon. The river Doon flows gracefully between the Loch Doon and the Firth of Clyde in Stirlingshire, Scotland. It was inspired by Robert Burns poem, The Banks of Doon, written in 1783.The piece was originally scored in 1903 for a chorus of women’s unison voices, accompanied by men’s voices, whistlers, and harmonium or organ at will. This was one of Grainger’s earliest folk-music arrangements, and it was dedicated to his dear friend Sigurd Fornander.The setting for band was completed in 1932 (British Folk-Music Setting No. 32).Arranged wind quintet, based on the wind band version.I have changed the key from Grainger's original in F, up to G to avoid the oboe soloist playing loads of Middle Cs!Video link is my clarinet quintet arrangement.Check out my wind dectet arrangements of his Lincolnshire PosyI have arranged more of his works for wind quintet:There was a pig went out to dig and for dectetSussex Mummers Carol

Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553690). On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring is a tone poem composed in 1912 by Frederick Delius; it was first performed in Leipzig on 23 October 1913. It is the first of Two Pieces for Small Orchestra, the second piece being Summer Night on the River, although these have for many years existed separately on recordings and in the concert hall.The piece opens with a slow three-bar sequence; its first theme is an exchange of cuckoo calls.The second theme is taken from a Norwegian folk song, In Ola Valley, which was brought to his attention by the Australian composer and folk-song arranger Percy Grainger. (The theme was also arranged by Edvard Grieg in his 19 Norwegian Folksongs, Op. 66.)The clarinet returns with the cuckoo calls before the piece ends in pastoral fashion.Arranged symphonic wind and contra bass/tuba.
