Johann Sebastian Bach wrote some song-like, lyrical pieces, often movements in larger compositions for instrumental ensembles, the so called „Airs. This piece, the Air of the second movement of the Suite No.3 in D major, BWV 1068 is one of the most impressive master works ever written in the history of the human being. The piece does not require virtuoso skills to perform and is appropriate for students or amateurs. Without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by a dedicated and very well rehearsed ensemble, it has always a very powerful effect on the audience. It can be used in concerts and all sorts of spiritual or religious events. In this arrangement for woodwind Quintet the bass is shared by the fagote and the horn as two independent voices that perform „as one. For a matter of study and comparison the original cello part is included in this work. It could be eventually used if the ensemble decides to double the original bass line with both the fagot and the horn. I also could not resist not to interchange the role of the flute and the oboe on the „repetition : I have shortened some of the notes and used various interpretation symbols, accents and nuances, they are mere suggestions for an interpretation and are total absent on the original score. The use of the dot over the notes is called „staccato, it means in this case that the note is shortened to approximately half of its length. Hayu Leilot (There were nights) was written by Mordecai Zeira in 1938 to a poem by Yaakov Orland. Though this song is little known outside of Israel today, it is one of my favorites, and I hope will become one of yours as well.I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon, Horn in F Individual parts can be used for rehearsal. In performance the combined score/part can be used - each wind quintet instrument plays as written, with the bassoon playing as if with a bass clef, the others as if with a treble clef. Eb and alto clef parts (based on the horn in F) are also available to enable inclusion, in a larger ensemble, of alto saxophone, tenor horn, viola. Programme Note I wanted to write a piece that took inspiration from one aspect of the political process. The starting point was a quote from William Burke (1729-97): All government, indeed every human benefit and enjoyment, every virtue, and every prudent act, is founded on compromise and barter. [Speech on Conciliation with America, 1775] This quote did not in itself suggest to me all that was required, and so I tried to suggest the ideas of 'SpeakYour Mind' and 'Trust' in the other two sections. The music is presented as a combined score/part and I felt that in this context the idea of musicians playing within a single 'forum' would have an extra resonance. The music is presented on two sides of a single page, and I deliberately preceded the third section 'Trust' with the instruction 'turn over...'. In this way I hope to evoke the idea of 'turning over a new leaf'.

This woodwind quintet arrangement turns the traditional French carol Patapan into a Patapan Fantasy, which also includes quotes from the carols God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Joy to the World, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, We Three Kings of Orient Are, and Good King Wenceslas, representing carols from England, France, the Czech Republic, and the United States. It is perfect for all holiday events, gatherings, recitals, or caroling gigs. The arrangement was written for most ensembles, from advanced high school quintets to college ensembles to professional quintets. What appealed to me most about this piece was that it's pitched in a minor key, making it slightly different from most Christmas carols. The lyrics are similar to The Little Drummer Boy: When you hear the fife and drum, dance and make the village hum. I have included an alternate bass clarinet part in lieu of a missing bassoon. Originally scored for piano, I hope you enjoy this unique setting for winds. If you like this arrangement, you might also like my woodwind quintet arrangement of the 16thC Spanish carol Riu Riu Chiu. Although not as well known as some American carols, it's a lively and dynamic arrangement that brings a taste of Europe to your holiday celebrations.
