This woodwind quintet arrangement captures the subtle textures of the composer’s chromatic harmonies inspired in the original vocal octet by a poem by T. B. Aldrich. Born of an African father, Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers.  One of Coleridge-Taylor's rare A Cappella compositions, this is arranged for traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and basson and includes substitute parts clarinet in B-flat for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat for horn and bass clarinet in B-flat for bassoon. Emoticons III is the third in a series of compositions that are designed to be aural representations of images that reflect emotions. This composition has eight short movements and is scored for wind quintet.I. Nebulous – The wandering tonality, slow tempo, frequent shifts of color, and lack of cadences gives this movement a feeling of vagueness.II. Puckish – This Allegretto movement has a playful quality that is created by staccato articulations, melodic leaps, unexpected use of rests and sudden tonality shifts to express an impish quality.III. Excited – A fast tempo and technical passages along with driving rhythms help this movement express excitement.IV. Horrified – Angular melodic lines, trills, dissonant chords, extreme ranges, and accents are all used to create this emotional representation.V. Jocular – This playful movement in an Allegretto tempo uses staccato, syncopation, meter change, dotted rhythms, and angular melodies for its laughing sounds.VI. Scattered – A Presto tempo with hemiola, staccato notes, and light scoring are used throughout this short movement that feels like it is constantly changing direction.VII. Regretful – This Lento movement has sad legato lines with unresolved dissonances at the beginning and end. The middle section creates a sense of hope but quickly returns to the sorrowful sound.VIII. Confident – This movement is in a march style with strong accents. Its clear lines and rhythms help portray strength in one’s beliefs.

This work is a representation of my experimentation with 20th-century harmonies and scales, as noted by Vincent Persichetti in his book Twentieth-Century Harmony. Through this process, I worked to combine aspects of these harmonic ideas with my own voice and focus on harmonic color and nature. Combining the harmonic tendencies of the 20th-century with my own harmonic language, and connecting them through digestible melodies led me to Resonance and Flow, a work that also capitalizes on the nature of the wind quintet's aural characteristics. The wind quintet can be equally homogenous or heterogeneous in timbre, and these can change based on combinations and roles of the instruments. In playing with all of these tools, Resonance and Flow is a representation of 20th-century music with a 21st-century attunement to the audience and their taste.

Full disclosure: This work is frankly atonal. Rhythms are tricky. Harmonies are unconventional to say the least. And even the form is nicely aberrant.Yet something magical happens when writing for winds: because of the weak timbre contact between the different instruments, one can write complex textures without losing clarity. One can write dissonant harmonies without having them sound harsh and grating. In fact, there are moments of surprising beauty here. Take for instance the color canons, passages combining all instruments in clusters whose harmonic and rhythmic motion is essentially static, but which shimmer with ever-changing timbres. The title translates - inexactly - to Keeper of Heaven, or Starry Watchman, or Celestial Caretaker, and refers to an imaginary character whose task it is to walk about the heavens at sunset and turn on the stars. He is the galactic equivalent of the old gentlemen who once went about Victorian streets, lighting the gas lamps and generally keeping an eye on things, making sure that all is well. I do not claim that this character is God the Father Almighty, only that he is an old gentleman. But there might very well be something wizard-ish about him!Performance time is approximately seven and a half minutes. The audio excerpt included here is of the last two minutes, where the music comes the closest to being tonal.

This monumental fugue employs a dramatic subject that later appears in inversion, leading to some very striking counterpoint; by the end, the emotional impact is overwhelming. Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has arranged several other great works for this ensemble, including many of his favorites from The Well Tempered Clavier (also avaiable on this website). The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.
