In two movements. A great recital piece to demonstrate nuances of the woodwind quintet. Sonata Op. 49 No. 2 Arranged from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 20, this is a simple but interesting work in two movements showing the composers sense of humor. The first movement Allegro ma non troppo and the second movement Tempo di Menuetto are both in the key of G. Both Sonatas 19 and 20 (op. 49, No. 1 & 2) are named Easy Sonatas because they are technically easier than the usual Beethoven Sonatas. This makes them very popular among students and teachers alike. Beethoven Background Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) was certainly a German pianist. Above all, he was probably one of the greatest composers in history. As a result, he is a pivotal character in the progress between the Classical and Romantic periods. He is certainly one of the most famous and hence important of all composers. Seems like his most familiar and noteworthy works include symphonies 1-9; piano concertos 1-5; and furthermore, the violin concerto. Also, certainly of extreme importance are the noteworthy 32 sonatas for the piano; the string quartets 1-16; the Missa solemnis; and likewise, his only opera, Fidelio. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna the rest of his life. In his late 20s it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies therefore belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. The Divertimento, originally for an orchestra (flute, oboe, bassoon, 4 horns and strings) was completed in June 1772 in Salzburg. It was probably written for an outdoor performance and Mozart certainly made full use of the opportunity to display his remarkable talents both to his prospective patrons and his talented fellow musicians who would have performed this extensive six movement piece.There are six movements, Allegro, a substantial sonata form piece; Adagio, a sophisticated piece written for strings only; a gem of a Menuetto with three trios; Allegretto; a Menuetto with 2 trios and a final Adagio - Allegro molto - Allegro assai forms the grand finale. The scale and sophistication of this piece is far beyond that of the early symphonies which Mozart composed around the same time.The arrangement is suitable for advanced and advanced intermediate players.In editing and arranging the Divertimento for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn it has been necessary to add phrase marks (shown in dashed lines) and extra staccato dots - not indicated. The lack of dynamic markings especially in the latter movements has been remedied in parentheses ( ). Some octave transpositions both up and down have been necessary and the glory of the four horn sections of the original have been re-scored as sympathetically as I am able.I do hope that quintet players will enjoy this arrangement of a very remarkable piece.

This selection, For Unto Us a Child is Born, from George Frideric Handel's world-famous oratorio, Messiah, would be an excellent addition to any music library. Originally written for a four-part chorus accompanied by a small orchestra, this selection has been arranged for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon, by Regis Bookshar, without losing any of the vitality of the original version. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement will entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come. It is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services, is suitable for high school, college and professional performers and is one of my all-time favorite arrangements. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (32 pages). Handel's original version is written in the key of Concert G. This version is written in the key of Concert F, to make it a little easier for some younger performers. This arrangement will prove to be a challenge for many players, especially during long passages played using one breath. Other versions of this selection, in both the keys of Concert F and the original key of Concert G, are available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. If you are considering having an organist or other keyboard player perform with this selection, I would suggest that you purchase the version in Concert G rather than the one in Concert F. Also available are numerous other arrangements in a variety of styles. I would encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar. You may find something else which might interest you as well. I'm certain that this arrangement will please students and audiences alike.

This selection, For Unto Us a Child is Born, from George Frideric Handel's world-famous oratorio, Messiah, would be an excellent addition to any music library. Originally written for a four-part chorus accompanied by a small orchestra, this selection has been arranged for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon, by Regis Bookshar, without losing any of the vitality of the original version. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement will entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come. It is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services, is suitable for high school, college and professional performers and is one of my all-time favorite arrangements. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (33 pages). Handel's original version is written in the key of Concert G, as is this version, but also available, if needed, is a version in the key of Concert F, to make it a little easier for some younger performers. This arrangement will prove to be a challenge for many players, especially during long passages played using one breath. Other versions of this selection, in both the keys of Concert F and the original key of Concert G, are available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. If you are considering having an organist or other keyboard player perform with this selection, I would suggest that you purchase this version in Concert G rather than the one in Concert F. Also available are numerous other arrangements in a variety of styles. I would encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar. The cantata „Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV 106- „God`s Time Is The Very Best Time, ranks among Bach's most important works. It is a work of genius such as even great masters seldom achieve. The Actus tragicus belongs to the great musical literature of the world. Although Bach's manuscript is lost, the work is agreed to be one of the earliest Bach cantatas, probably composed during the year he spent in Mühlhausen 1707/1708 as organist of the Divi Blasil church, at the age of 22. Various funerals known to have taken place at this time have been proposed as the occasion for the composition, for example that of his uncle Tobias Lämmerhirt from his mother's family, who died inErfurt on 10 August 1707, and that of Adolph Strecker, a former mayor of Mühlhausen, whose funeral was 16 September 1708. The earliest surviving manuscript, in the hand of Christian Friedrich Penzel, was copied in 1768 after Bach's death. It introduced the title Actus tragicus. The cantata was published in 1876 as part of the first complete edition of Bach's works: the Bach-Gesellschaft-Ausgabe, edited by Wilhelm Rust. The text consists of different Bible passages from the Old and New Testament, as well as individual verses of hymns by Martin Lither and Adam Reusner, which all together refer to finiteness, preparation for death and dying. The Arrangement is relatively easy to perform, also appropriate for beginners. It is an ideal piece for advanced performers, this music touches deep into the Soul. The piece was arranged for modern instruments, I introduced some embellishments and interpretation symbols thus shortening the length of some notes, but no notes where otherwise changed or omitted in this arrangement. Also the original placement of the voices is totally respected, the structure of the piece was simply left as it was composed in its original form. Bach scored the instrumental parts for a small ensemble of Baroque instruments two recorders, two violas da gamba and continuo. I propose an interpretation for a modern woodwind quintet in this arrangement. You should feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills, Your taste and Soul. Have fun! It is a piece that can be used in many different kinds of situations, from the serious concert hall to a funeral, in Easter or even Christmas celebrations and all other kinds of Spiritual events. When performed Live It will give you back a great feedback from the public, you will always want to have it in your repertoire. The score was written on Finale. This six movement suite was composed between 1700 and 1750 - most likely near to the beginning of the 18th century when Telemann was using older style titles for the 6 movements - Overture, Chasse, Menuet, La Toye, Sarabande and Loure. Telemann did not indicate any dynamics, instead relying on contrasting pairs of players and the full ensemble. Advanced intermediate players will enjoy the well contrasted, mostly lively movements. Horn players may prefer to transpose some passages down an octave. Some trills have been added and dashed slurs to match the few indicated in the original set of parts. The Suite is very likely to have been performed at outside and inside events and the mode of performance adapted accordingly.

Day Dreams is a collection of six solo piano miniatures the young Arthur Sullivan published in 1867. The pieces amply demonstrate a natural melodic gift that would reach full fruition in the enduring comic operas Sullivan wrote with W.S. Gilbert. This is a contrasting pair of Daydreams, numbers 2 and 6, arranged for woodwind quintet. The first Daydream, Robert and Clara, is an expressive cantabile aria that evokes the music of Robert Schumann. The oboe, clarinet, and horn sing the complete melody, but everyone gets at least a fragment of it. (This selection is great for weddings and church services as well as for the concert hall.) The second, À l'Hongroise, is the flashy finale of the Day Dreams collection. It's a spirited Hungarian-inspired dance with a chromatic melody in shifting tonality, with harmonic turns audacious enough to thrill even 21st century listeners, culminating in a wide-ranging arpeggio passage for the four woodwinds.
