The 12 songs have traditional melodies but the harmonisations are all my own. In most cases, the tunes are rather short, so would be repeated as often as necessary, with the performers varying the melody in turn, as the mood takes them.There is no set order in which to play the music, but there are 12, so that a different one can be performed on each of the 12 days of Christmas.

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767471). Basically it is a set of three dances loosely described as Allemande, Courante and Jygg. Orchestration is for wind quintet Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F and Bassoon.The style of the first one is marcato, with a touch of irony! The bassoon leads with an Alberti pattern followed by the first melodic idea stated on the horn. This motif is eventually taken up by all the instruments. The melody then morphs into a lovely little B-section melody on the flute with an oboe obbligato before the DS. Surprisingly simple, but 3 mins long.Movement 2 plays on the meaning of courante (running). It's in 3, as courantes were. Each instrument has an important role in keeping the music flowing - even the bassoon and horn. The middle section has a mournful bassoon melody with weaving contrapuntal lines from all the others. There's a bridge into the DS and the first section is repeated, leading eventually to the short coda.Movement 3 is the hardest movement. It's in 9/8 with lots of dynamism. A brand new setting of this carol for wind quintet (Fl/Ob/Cl/Hn/Bssn).After a short introduction, we hear a fairly normal rendition of the tune with standard harmony. The second verse has the addition of fanfare-like motifs in the top two parts which add some sparkle to the tune. The intention is merely to heighten the feeling of 'announcement' which we get from the words. The melody is also much more decorated and placed into the middle of the ensemble.From Letter C there is an interlude of fanfares before the final verse at the grandioso. This is the loudest part of the setting and needs to sound warm, full and rich.This setting is intended to be played by any ensemble. I have kept the range used reasonable and it does not require any special techniques.

This is a brand new, original piece for wind quintet.I decided that I wanted to create a musical description of summer under lockdown, spending time in the garden (although there are no bird sounds) in the NorthWest of England. The weather here is usually very changeable (it's why we talk about it so much) so, of course, I included a thunderstorm in the middle!The piece opens with a gentle walk in the garden, (bassoon) the beautiful flowers swaying in the slight breeze (clarinet and horn). The oboe melody that enters in bar two expresses my thoughts of delight at the beautiful scene. The melody is passed around the ensemble, there's a duet with the flute and then the bassoon takes charge, with the horn taking over the walking bassline.At letter C there's an abrupt change of scene as I notice the bees busily flitting from flower to flower, pollenating and collecting nectar. The instruments play flutter-tongue to imitate an annoyed buzz every now and again as bees from different hives chance upon the same flower, but all remains peacefully business-like.At Letter D, we have a slight slowing of tempo as some butterflies flit from place to place, aimlessly taking off and landing fluttering for a short while in the sunshine. This section is as carefree as possible and should just amble along. The tempo can be pulled about quite a bit.At Letter F, there's a huge, sudden thunderstorm, jagged lightning and rolling thunder as a downpour drenches the garden. Just as suddenly as it started, the storm ends and rain reduces to a thin drizzle. Out comes the sun and we continue through the garden into the distance.
