This entertaining and playful Juba Dance is from Music in the Bottoms, a collection of five characteristic works by the prominent Canadian-American Black composer Robert Nathaniel Dett. Dett studied with notable teachers including composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an honorary Masters Degree from the Eastman School of Music in 1932. Arranged for a traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, with alternate parts clarinet in B-flat substitute for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat substitute for horn, and bass clarinet in B-flat substitute for bassoon, it has great audience appeal. RayThompsonMusic #956846. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1372535). Debussy: Danse bohémienne La Danse bohémienne (Bohemian Dance) is a piano piece composed in the late summer of 1880. This is the composer's first published piano work. It was judged by Tchaikovsky as follows...It's really a very nice thing, though really too short; not one thought is expressed through to the end and the form is extremely messy and devoid of wholeness ...  It was written when he was eighteen years old for Nadejda von Meck, Tchaikovsky's rich and generous patroness. Frank Dawes writes of the Danse bohémienne, there is perhaps a mild gipsiness that may have been picked up from the gipsy singers at the Moscow cabarets that Debussy is reputed to have frequented. In texture the piece has something of the salon style of Tchaikovsky, though very much simplified. This straightforward piece, in B minor and 2/4 time, isn't altogether without a few dashes of polka rhythm, but its only notable point of originality comes in the coda, where a tonic chord over a submediant pedal point highlights the interval of a major seventh, possible slightly Russian in character.The score was first published in 1932 by Schott (Maintence), then by Henle (1991, ed. Ernst-Günter Heinemann) and Durand (2000, ed. Roy Howat)It is arranged for standard wind quintet.

He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, gaining first prizes for solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint and fugue. He won the French Prix de Rome in 1882, with his cantata Edith. His teachers included Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, César Franck (for the organ) and Jules Massenet (for composition).He succeeded César Franck as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris from 1890 to 1898. He himself was succeeded by another distinguished Franck pupil, Charles Tournemire. Associated for many years with Édouard Colonne's concert series, the Concerts Colonne, from 1903, Pierné became chief conductor of this series in 1910.His most notable early performance was the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, at the Ballets Russes, Paris, on 25 June 1910. His family moved to Paris, after Metz and part of Lorraine were annexed to Germany in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, gaining first prizes for solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint and fugue. He won the French Prix de Rome in 1882, with his cantata Edith. His teachers included Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, César Franck (for the organ) and Jules Massenet (for composition).He succeeded César Franck as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris from 1890 to 1898. He himself was succeeded by another distinguished Franck pupil, Charles Tournemire. Associated for many years with Édouard Colonne's concert series, the Concerts Colonne, from 1903, Pierné became chief conductor of this series in 1910.His most notable early performance was the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, at the Ballets Russes, Paris, on 25 June 1910. He remained in the post until 1933 (when Paul Paray took over his duties). The third movement is an essay on the varying colors and moods of a single Eb. These Silent Duration pieces are notable for their incorporation of silence as an integral part of the compositional fabric. The duration is 24'40. Arranged wind quintetIncludes natural Horn in Bb basso (Alt Hn in F provided)The Six Viennese Sonatinas were not originally composed by Mozart for the piano. They are a contemporary arrangement of selected movements from the Five Wind Divertimentos for 3 basset horns, K. 439b which Mozart wrote in 1783.The Divertimentos are notable for their conciseness of form and their melodic richness. (Each divertimento has 5 movements.)They therefore make an excellent introduction to Mozart's piano music, even though they are not completely typical of Mozart's piano writing. We do not know for certain who made the arrangement, but Alexander Weinmann has shown that it was probably Ferdinand Kauer. The order of movements is not the same as in the original; moreover, some of the Trios have been exchanged and recapitulations have been shortened in some instances.This is my arrangement for wind quintet of Viennese Sonatina No.4 in Bb The original 3 parts have been reallocated around the quintet, with some octave and harmony additions.I have added an original natural horn part for a more authentic Mozart sound.
