Arranged standard wind quintetPeer Gynt, Op. 23, is the incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play of the same name, written by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg in 1875. It premiered along with the play on 24 February 1876 in Christiania (now Oslo).Over a decade after composing the full incidental music for Peer Gynt, Grieg extracted eight movements to make two four-movement suites known as the Peer Gynt Suites Nos 1 and 2.These suites are among his best-known works, however, they initially began as incidental compositions.Suite No. 1, Op. 46 was published in 1888, and Suite No. 2, Op. 55 was published in 1893.A typical rendition of both suites lasts 20 to 35 minutes.Suite No. 1 is better known as it contains  both Morning and The Hall of the Mountain King , but Suite No.2 contains the delightful Solveig's Song which is arranged here.I have arranged all of Suite No.1. The hunters in their hunting dress are mounted on their horses; in early dawn the borzois are jumping. Parts of this piece are reminiscent of the horn call in the 1812 overture. Fun for each player.

It was written in 1893, during Dvořák's time in the United States of America. The quartet is one of the most popular in the chamber music repertoire. For the London premiere of his New World symphony, Dvořák wrote: As to my opinion I think that the influence of this country (it means the folk songs)) is to be seen, and that this and all other works (written in America) differ very much from my other works as well as in colour as in character,. A characteristic, unifying element throughout the quartet is the use of the pentatonic scale. This scale gives the whole quartet its open, simple character, a character that is frequently identified with American folk music. It is the second of this set of two songs. I scored the left hand part of the piano accompaniment for bassoon and horn in order to take pressure off of the bassoon player. A little harmony and counterpoint have been added to make this more suitable for a wind quintet and add some interest. This is a beautiful piece that I believe could be played by an intermediate ensemble.

The melody lines sound beautifully varied in all voices.The main theme of the set is the opening of the folk song “Hrály dudy†(The bagpipes played). Dvorak really enjoyed writing the Bagatelles, and you can hear that in this lyrical music... and it's a joy to play!
