These are sometimes referred to as Nos. 25, 26, and 27, respectively.This is no 4 in E minor Largo This piece was played at the composer's funeral on organ. It consists of a slow melody in the right hand* that prolongs tonic resolution and repeated block chords in the left hand that descend chromatically.It is quite short- 25 bars.It is arranged here for wind quintet.Transposed from E minor into F minor to assist players.*The Melody is given to the clarinet.Check out my Chopin arrangements of some of his other Preludes (including Raindrop) and of Nocturne No.2.

In this arrangement the key has been altered to suit the instruments range for the classic Wind Quintet combination of Flute, Oboe, Bb Clarinet, French Horn & Bassoon. Programme Notes: THE PRELUDE The solemn and expressive character of the melody line is somewhat reminiscent of much of Bach's passion music, and weaves between the players with utmost ease. The Preludes most prominent melodic feature is the octave leap heard on all parts throughout the music, which leads to a satisfying conclusion. THE FUGUE Coming in at a whopping 115 bars, this is one of Bach's longest and most complex fugues. With three themes woven through together in five voices as only Bach can, this fugue offers a competent group of instrumentalists with many technical and interpretive challenges! Being in B Major, this is the quintessential Prelude and Fugue that couldn't be played in tune in standard baroque keyboard temperament, thus making the case for Bach's preferred temperament system (the details of which remain a mystery!). Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has arranged several other great works for this ensemble, including many of his favorites from The Well Tempered Clavier (also available on this website). The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.

Three selections based on Christ lag in Todesbanden (Christ lay in death's bonds) (from Cantata No.  4, BMV  4) - Johann Sebastian Bach - Woodwind Quintet (1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn, 1 Bassoon) - Advanced /Intermediate - .Cantata No.  4, BMV  4, Christ lag in Todesbanden (also spelled Todes Banden) is a cantata for Easter written by Johann Sebastian Bach and is his earliest surviving Church Cantata. It was probably written in 1707 when he was 22 years old. It is a Chorale Cantata, a style in which both the text and music are based on a hymn. In this instance, the source was Martin Luther's hymn of the same name which became a main Easter hymn in German Lutheranism.Regis Bookshar has transcribed and arranged three selections based on this hymn tune, two from Bach's Cantata No.  4, BMV  4, and also his Chorale Prelude, BMV 625. They may be played individually or as a trilogy and each movement gets more complex than the previous one. The first selection in this trilogy is the Chorale, Christ lag in Todesbanden, the final chorus from his Cantata No.  4, a straightforward four-part chorale setting of the hymn (Regis has also added a fifth part). This is followed by Bach's Chorale Prelude, BMV 625, a piece from his Orgelbuchlein (Littel Organ Book), a collection of 46 Preludes for organ, written almost exclusively during the 1708-1717 period, while Bach was court organist at Weimar. For the final selection, Regis has placed the polyphonic and imitative chorus, Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg, da Tod und Leben rungen (It was a strange battle, that death and life waged), which Bach had placed in the middle of his Cantata No.  4.This arrangement is for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Bb Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon.
