Gospel music has infiltrated the New Orleans jazz repertoire since the very early days of jazz. Although gospel songs were traditionally played by jazz bands at funerals or church, it is now common that these songs are also played in secular venues. “Down by the Riverside†is an example of such a song, adapted by jazz musicians to fit the New Orleans jazz or brass band style. It has been a staple in New Orleans jazz since at least the early 1920s. This arrangement for Woodwind Quintet plus optional Acoustic Bass and Drum Set is written in the style of a New Orleans Brass Band, the kind of tune you might hear at a Second Line Parade or Jazz Funeral. Published by Gryphon Music Australia (A0.787485). Here is an arrangement for five alto saxes of Grieg's very well known movement from his Peer Gynt suite, In the Hall of the Mountain King. It is suitable for young players who are enjoy ensemble playing. Sax 4 is slightly easier, but the other parts are of equal difficulty, and the work is shared around so that everyone gets to play the tune and also be the goblins and trolls. Nobody has to play the quaver passages alone, so this arrangement is a good confidence builder.It is a good introduction to playing in an ensemble whilst maintaining a constant accelerando without getting out of control.

The Boar's Head CarolThis Christmas carol talks about a feast during midwinter in which a wild boar was served as the main dish and its head placed in a situated position to symbolize bravery and abundance. Closely related to the Norse tradition of boar sacrifice to their goddess Freyja during the feast of Winter Solstice, this song originated from an urban legend in Queen's College, Oxford back in the 15th century which tells of how a scholar from Queen’s College managed to kill an attacking boar and offered it at dinner.The song was first published in English during the 1520’s in a book entitled Christmase Carolles Newly Emprynted at London in the flete street, which was written by Jan van Wynken de Worde. It is also said to be the very 1st Christmas carol to ever be publish in English because it dates back that early.Although the modern versions of the song makes no mention of Christmas, the original verses does so in The boar's head we bring with song, in worship of Him that thus sprung, of a Virgin to redress all wrong; NoelThis Intermediate Level arrangement starts out in Bb Major and modulates to C Major for the final chorus Performance time approx. 1 minute 45 seconds.

This is a brand new, original piece for wind quintet.I decided that I wanted to create a musical description of summer under lockdown, spending time in the garden (although there are no bird sounds) in the NorthWest of England. The weather here is usually very changeable (it's why we talk about it so much) so, of course, I included a thunderstorm in the middle!The piece opens with a gentle walk in the garden, (bassoon) the beautiful flowers swaying in the slight breeze (clarinet and horn). The oboe melody that enters in bar two expresses my thoughts of delight at the beautiful scene. The melody is passed around the ensemble, there's a duet with the flute and then the bassoon takes charge, with the horn taking over the walking bassline.At letter C there's an abrupt change of scene as I notice the bees busily flitting from flower to flower, pollenating and collecting nectar. The instruments play flutter-tongue to imitate an annoyed buzz every now and again as bees from different hives chance upon the same flower, but all remains peacefully business-like.At Letter D, we have a slight slowing of tempo as some butterflies flit from place to place, aimlessly taking off and landing fluttering for a short while in the sunshine. This section is as carefree as possible and should just amble along. The tempo can be pulled about quite a bit.At Letter F, there's a huge, sudden thunderstorm, jagged lightning and rolling thunder as a downpour drenches the garden. Just as suddenly as it started, the storm ends and rain reduces to a thin drizzle. Out comes the sun and we continue through the garden into the distance.

Arranged wind quintet: fl, ob, clt, hn and bsnIn My Life is a song by the English rock band the Beatles. It appeared on their 1965 album Rubber Soul. Its lyrics were written primarily by John Lennon, credited to Lennon–McCartney. George Martin contributed the  solo bridge passage.The song was recorded on 18 October 1965, and was complete except for the instrumental bridge. At that time, Lennon had not decided what instrument to use, but he subsequently asked George Martin to play a piano solo, suggesting something Baroque-sounding. Martin wrote a Bach-influenced piece that he found he could not play at the song's tempo. On 22 October, the solo was recorded with the tape running at half speed, so when played back at normal pace the piano was twice as fast and an octave higher, solving the performance challenge and also giving the solo a unique timbre, reminiscent of a harpsichord.According to Lennon, In My Life was his first real major piece of work because it was the first time he wrote about his own life.In 2000, Mojo named In My Life the best song of all time.
