The Chaconne was composed for organ but not published during Johann Pachelbel’s lifetime. First Publication was in 1901 by Breitkopf und Härtel. The four bar/measure theme is repeated as are all 25 variations. In almost every instance the repeat would have been more elaborate or played in a different register on the organ.In arranging the Chaconne for wind players I have used the different characteristics of the wind instruments in varying combinations and changes of register to create what I hope is an enjoyable and entertaining concert piece for players of advanced intermediate standard. The three part writing has been expanded to the five instruments of the standard woodwind quintet to give a wider scope for variation of scoring which also enables the players some breathing space.The dynamic markings are editorial so do feel free to use your own.

The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux) is a humorous musical suite of fourteen movements by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The work was written for private performance by an ad hoc ensemble of two pianos and other instruments, and lasts around 25 minutes.Originally scored Double bass and piano: this section is marked Allegro pomposo, the perfect caricature for an elephant. The piano plays a waltz-like triplet figure while the bass hums the melody beneath it. Like Tortues, this is also a musical joke-the thematic material is taken from the Scherzo from Mendelssohn's incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream and Berlioz's Dance of the Sylphs from The Damnation of Faust. The two themes were both originally written for high, lighter-toned instruments (flute and various other woodwinds, and violin, accordingly); the joke is that Saint-Saëns moves this to the lowest and heaviest-sounding instrument in the orchestra, the double bass.Arranged her for standard wind quintetI have given the tune to the bassoon with the horn taking the 8 bars of the Dance of the Sylphs music.The  notes of the chords are given to the other 3 instruments but not always tutti _ wind players have to breath!

The melody likely originated from the clarinetist Barney Bigard in 1941, but its origin is not perfectly clear.It was also known as Duke's Place, with lyrics added by Bill Katts, Bob Thiele and Ruth Roberts.Ellington's black and white film was produced in 1942. The video depicts a jam session where Ellington begins playing with a double bass before gradually being joined by other members of his band, among them drummer Sonny Greer and trumpeter Rex Stewart. The film title is Jam Session. Western Swing band leader Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys recorded the song sometime between 1945 and 1947 as part of the Tiffany Transcriptions. Bill Doggett recorded a version on his 1958 tribute album Salute to Duke Ellington (King). C Jam Blues was used by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band as the basis of their song The Intro and the Outro. Mulgrew Miller and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen included the song in their 1999 album The Duets. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy them and everyone will recognise No, 2 which became very popular in Beethoven's life time and has remained so ever since.
