This selection, Burgundian Air/March of the Three Kings, has been arranged for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon, by Regis Bookshar. It would be a great addition to any music library. It incorporates two Traditional French melodies into one exciting arrangement, which, I'm certain, will entertain both performers and audiences alike. It is suitable for high school and college students and is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services but could be performed anytime and anywhere. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (21 pages). It begins with a Burgundian Air, played by a solo instrument. The melody is then played by two instruments in harmony before the rest of the ensemble joins in. This is followed by the March of the Three Kings, a Provencal melody (La Marche Des Rois Mages) which dates from the 13th century and recalls the Three Kings of the Christmas story. The peasants probably sang and danced to this tune, even perhaps honoring their own folk heroes, the French dukes, dressed in their shining armor and carrying brilliant banners, as they marched off to the Crusades. Georges Bizet utilized this tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet's play L'Arlesienne (The Girl from Arles). There is a fugal section in which each instrument enters, playing an embellished version of the tune before concluding the arrangement. Also available are other settings of these two Traditional French melodies for a variety of instrumental ensembles as well as numerous other arrangements in a variety of styles. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar. You may find something else which might interest you as well. I'm certain that students will enjoy playing this arrangement.

Three selections based on Christ lag in Todesbanden (Christ lay in death's bonds) (from Cantata No.  4, BMV  4) - Johann Sebastian Bach - Woodwind Quintet (1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn, 1 Bassoon) - Advanced /Intermediate - .Cantata No.  4, BMV  4, Christ lag in Todesbanden (also spelled Todes Banden) is a cantata for Easter written by Johann Sebastian Bach and is his earliest surviving Church Cantata. It was probably written in 1707 when he was 22 years old. It is a Chorale Cantata, a style in which both the text and music are based on a hymn. In this instance, the source was Martin Luther's hymn of the same name which became a main Easter hymn in German Lutheranism.Regis Bookshar has transcribed and arranged three selections based on this hymn tune, two from Bach's Cantata No.  4, BMV  4, and also his Chorale Prelude, BMV 625. They may be played individually or as a trilogy and each movement gets more complex than the previous one. The first selection in this trilogy is the Chorale, Christ lag in Todesbanden, the final chorus from his Cantata No.  4, a straightforward four-part chorale setting of the hymn (Regis has also added a fifth part). This is followed by Bach's Chorale Prelude, BMV 625, a piece from his Orgelbuchlein (Littel Organ Book), a collection of 46 Preludes for organ, written almost exclusively during the 1708-1717 period, while Bach was court organist at Weimar. For the final selection, Regis has placed the polyphonic and imitative chorus, Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg, da Tod und Leben rungen (It was a strange battle, that death and life waged), which Bach had placed in the middle of his Cantata No.  4.This arrangement is for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Bb Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon. The popularity of the waltz in Vienna began during the 1820s when it was still developing from a lively peasant dance popular amongst all classes into its later, more elegant phase. These dances were written after 1824 - probably for Schubert's own gatherings and published by Schubert for use in the large dance halls which were all the rage at the time. The three dances would have been played as one continuous piece for dancing and the tempo would not alter.

Divertissement was composed during 2005 for the Cadence Music Ensemble and rewritten in 2010 for Bret Pimentel, a virtuoso performer on multiple woodwinds. This version was created in 2023 and is a showcase for members of the quintet. A divertissement is a multi-movement composition designed to divert, entertain or to amuse. There are six contrasting movements in this composition; Intrada (flute feature), Nocturne (Horn feature), Valse (bassoon feature), Marche (clarinet feature), Romanza (oboe feature), and Galop (spotlight on members of the ensemble). The Intrada is energetic and playful with a lot of interplay between instruments. The Nocturne, being a night piece, is both lyrical and mysterious. The Waltz is in a flowing waltz tempo with occasional shifts away from three beats in the measure. The Marche is not a piece that would be used in a parade. It is a march that exists in the mind of a child who is playing with toy soldiers; therefore there is playfulness and humor that would not occur in a functional march. Lyrical lines and expressiveness are the predominating features of the Romanza. The piece comes to a rousing close with the Galop, which is a “perpetual motion†type of movement with a lot of rhythmic variety.

Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553690). On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring is a tone poem composed in 1912 by Frederick Delius; it was first performed in Leipzig on 23 October 1913. It is the first of Two Pieces for Small Orchestra, the second piece being Summer Night on the River, although these have for many years existed separately on recordings and in the concert hall.The piece opens with a slow three-bar sequence; its first theme is an exchange of cuckoo calls.The second theme is taken from a Norwegian folk song, In Ola Valley, which was brought to his attention by the Australian composer and folk-song arranger Percy Grainger. (The theme was also arranged by Edvard Grieg in his 19 Norwegian Folksongs, Op. 66.)The clarinet returns with the cuckoo calls before the piece ends in pastoral fashion.Arranged symphonic wind and contra bass/tuba.

Upon receiving this commission, Icontacted several of my friends (Jeff McCray, Matt Morris, and Richard Ramey) and requested lists of the mosthighly regarded staples of the wind quintet repertoire. After studying these works, I selected one of my favoritesubjects from Norse mythology as inspiration. Unfortunately, this did not work out as the work wanted to be toolarge and I could not reduce it down to a small chamber work.At that point, I decided to switch gears and find a new source of inspiration, which I found in a poem by James Yatestitled White Tiger Trilogy. I sketched out three movements based on this poem and was, again, displeased with theresulting work. However, I did very much like many elements from the sketches, so I decided to strip the piece downto these elements and construct one single cohesive movement. I chose my favorite line from the original sketchesand made that the central theme in an extended sonata rondo movement. I was finally pleased with this product thatincluded elements from all of the different versions. Dreams of the White Tiger was commissioned by 111 wind quintets in consortium led by my friend Richard Rameyand is dedicated to all of those who contributed to making this project a reality.

Three Trifles for Woodwind Quintet are three bagatelles that are meant to be fun for the listener as well as the players.The first movement is a Tango. It should be played seductively and expressively throughout.The second movement is a Pastorale. It is quiet in nature and features instruments in different combinations in duet and trio form until the final tutti ending.The third movement is a Badinage. Badinage means playful or humorous. As a student in college, I was amember of a woodwind quintet called Badinage. This group was certainly playful, and each of us had our own sense of humor...it was one of the best quintet experiences I've ever had. This movement is in several sections that reflect playfulness, humor and reflection.Three Trifles for Woodwind Quintet was premiered by the Heart of Illinois Woodwind Quintet in February 2012.I hope players and listeners enjoy these trifles.
