The first two movements (Plein Jeu and Fugue) from Nicolas deGrigny's great organ setting of the plainchant Veni Creator Spiritus, arranged for woodwind quintet. (The translation of this music from the medium of organ solo to that of wind quintet is a natural one, since these movements were composed in five-part counterpoint, and given that the combination of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon is a tonal palette very similar to that of a French baroque organ.) Score and parts have been thoroughly edited, such that any good quintet should be able to produce a stylistically-appropriate performance using the articulation, dynamics, and ornamentation provided, whether or not the players have any prior acquaintance with the genre.

Instrumentation: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in Bb, 2 horns in F, 2 bassoons Program note.Nancy Braithwaite, for whom I have written many works - all of them featuring her instrument the clarinet - told me that she was a member of a wind group based on Richard Strauss’ Serenade in E-flat Major, opus 7, for thirteen instruments: two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, four horns, two bassoons, and contrabassoon. I said to Nancy, I should write a piece for that group. She said that was a good idea. I soon discovered that the name of the group is La Rondine, or the swallow. I then remembered that Puccini wrote an opera called La Rondine. So I told Nancy that I might do a little research on the Puccini opera and come up with a piece inspired by thematic snippets I found in the opera. Well, I did not find Puccini’s music that conducive to a transformation into TOL music. Around the same time, I stumbled upon a 27-CD box set of nine operas by the Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi. As I was listening to these obscure operas by Vivaldi it dawned on me that I was very attracted to what I was hearing, and it was seeping into my musical thinking in the most natural way imaginable. Very quickly I was hearing things for this work I planned to write for Nancy’s group, and the music just moved along quite smoothly from one movement into another. At the same time I began reading about Vivaldi and his life as a priest, violinist, teacher, impresario, and composer in the city of Venice and other cities nearby. What a fascinating life he led!!! I also discovered in my reading that the city of Venice at that time was called La Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia. So, instead of a serenade for ten instruments, my work for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons, is called La Serenissima as an homage to Antonio Vivaldi and that glorious city of Venice. This World's Fair was known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and celebrated the centennial of the historic event that doubled the size of the United States and launched an age of exploration and Western expansion. The fair, which attracted an estimated 20 million people from around the world, encouraged visitors to look back to the nation's frontier days while looking ahead to progress in the fields of technology, science, and medicine. Exhibits from fifty foreign countries and almost all of the states ensured that fairgoers had a good time.The cascades of Joplin's title were part of the most beautiful feature of the Exhibition, as a souvenir photo book from the fair phrased it. Fourteen waterfalls flowed into a basin in front of the fair's centerpiece, Festival Hall, with the Colonnade of States surrounding it. Festival Hall was the fair's main venue for music performances and housed the world's largest pipe organ at the time. In that march, he is able to conjure up a magnificent scene of the old circus tents -- all the aromas, all the sounds, all the sights, and, of course, the circus band. King in 'A Night in June' he transports you to a simpler time. With images of sitting on the porch at evening listening to the crickets sipping on ice tea and just enjoying life. This arrangement is for Woodwind Quintet; where the French Horn has the melody for the majority of the time. Usually in woodwind quintet settings French Horn plays a support role with the Flute or oboe playing the melody. In this arrangement the horn gets to shine. This is a great teaching piece for an advancing Woodwind Quintet. It does have some tricky key signatures for all of the parts but would make a great supplement to a summer music camp or music program looking to challenge a young ensemble.
