I have composed this piece with influence of the composition style of the great Estonian composer, Arvo Part. The miniature score 'Study of Psalm 134' is a contemporary neoclassical piece composed on Psalm 134 of the Christian Bible. My compositions are influenced by Peter Sculthorpe, a contemporary Australian composer, and also Arvo Part, the great Estonian composer. This score is a miniature dramatic piece of music that expresses the rhapsodic nature of God's blessing and in turn our praise of Him. The score is not a hymn with lyrics, therefore. The pianist should peddle freely throughout.

Geometria is a serial composition*.Geometria, Latin for geometry, is an arrangement of sound shapes. Beginning with a parallelogram it moves to a square and then to a triangle. At the apex of the triangle the piece retrogrades back through the previous shapes; a mirror image in sound. The parallelogram is achieved by use of canon, the square by homophony and the triangle by staggered entrances. There are 5 instruments and 5 notes; F, F#, A,C# and Bb. F#,Bb,C# form a major triad, F#,A,C# form a minor triad, A,Bb,C# form trichord 3-3, Bb,C#,F form trichord 3-11 and A,C#,F form trichord 3-12. Therefore, 5 geometric shapes, 5 instruments, 5 notes, 5 plus harmonic possibilities and 5 players. *Serial Music - the use of a sequence of notes in a definite order as a thematic basis for a composition and a source from which the musical material is derived. Serialism was an attempt to escape tonal-centered compositions prior to the twentieth century. It began with Arnold Schoenberg's twelve tone-technique in the early 1900's, though some of his contemporaries such as Anton Webern, Alban Berg, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Luigi Nono and Milton Babbit were also working to establish serialism as a form of post-tonal thinking. Other composers such as Bela Bartok, Luciano Berio, Benjamin Britten, John Cage, Aaron Copland, Olivier Messiean, Arvo Part, Dmitri Shostakovich and Igor Stravinsky used serialism only for some of their compositions.

Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.903751). Picnic on Blue Grass was composed for a concert of summer music. Erik Satie's style in the Gymnopédies was suitably relaxing, and the addition of Arvo Pärt-like tintinnabulation would add interest and a very gentle decorative effect. The clarinet, tired of playing a simple bass line, takes off at one point to play ragtime, to the disapproval of the rest of the group (and the embarassment of the violin, who cannot resist joining in). The violin also has a very simple part, but she takes a cue from the Satie-style final phrygian modal cadence to give an unexpected bluegrass flourish. The Instrumentation is: 2 flutes, violin and clarinet, but almost any treble instruments could replace the flutes, and an alto saxophone the clarinet: ask for parts. The piece lasts about three minutes.

Published by C.M.Brandon (A0.1225338). A three movement suite which highlights the versatility of the clarinet. In the Tradition – An enjoyable piece written in the “textbook†Sonata form. One will be able to find an Introduction, Primary Theme, Transition, Secondary theme, Closing Theme, Development, and the Recapitulation. The classical styling showcases the clarinet’s versatility, range, and colors. In the Tinnabular – This melancholy piece explores the minimalist style of composition invented by Arvo Pärt called tintinnabuli. The two voice types characterized in this method (‘tintinnabular’ arpeggiating voice/the stepwise diatonic voice) are found in the piano while the clarinet adds a melody. Both of these voices expand, note by note, over time. In the Time of Rag – A lively and entertaining piece in the ‘ragtime’ style. Performers are encouraged to improvise, as was customary for these pieces. The drum set is not necessary but does add a great dimension to the music. From my research, I believe the style of drumming needed is “2nd line drummingâ€. The high hat and snare notation is meant to simulate the beats using brushes, rather than sticks, on the snare while maintaining the march rhythms. Washboards, tambourines, and the like could be incorporated at the discretion of the percussionist. Dynamic levels of the drums should not overtake the clarinet and piano but enhance the overall performance.

Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.527336). A nice arpeggio piece for solo steel string acoustic or classical guitar. The piece has a meditative almost hypnotic character and was called lullaby by my daughters which is a good alternative title. It can be played at different tempos and changes character according to tempo. The faster versions border on the minimalism of Steve Reich and the slower versions tend toward the contemplations of Arvo Pärt. I created the piece as a study in arpeggio for intermediate to advanced students of guitar and hope it will fill a gap in the modern repertoire of arpeggio studies. It has been a favorite with audiences over the years at my live performances. In the YouTube link I play on a steel string guitar. The piece works just as well, though with a slightly more mellow sound, on a nylon string classical guitar.
