Charles-Camille Saint-SaeÌ?ns (9 October 1835-16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist.He was a musical prodigy and made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the ocial church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas. As a young man, Saint-SaeÌ?ns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers.This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and dodecaphonic schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death. He wrote the Oratorio de NoeÌ?l (Christmas Oratorio) at the end of the 1850s and completed it in 1860.The first performanse was at the church La Madeleine in Paris December 1869.The work is dedicated to A Madame la Vicomtesse de Grandval.The work is originally scored for five soloists, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, mixed choir (except no. 4 which is for SSAA), harp, organ and strings (in this edition the choir has been transcribed for a SSAA choir). Texts in the Oratorio de NoeÌ?l is drawn from the Old and New Testaments: (1. Instrumental).2. Luke 2,8-14. 3. Psalm 39,1. 4. John 11.27. 5. Psalm 117, 26-28. 6. Psalm 2,1 and Gloria Patri. 7. Psalm 109,3 and Graduale. 8. Isaiah 49,13. 9. The speaker uses nocturnal events to represent life: although the rain (mournful times) is not here, the stars cannot be seen if one is not opening themselves to love and the beauty life offers. The speaker believes the message should be heard by all, so everyone can witness the stars and encourages others to become messengers themselves.Duration: approx. 5:02The Message was selected as a winner in the 2020 MMEA Honors Composition Contest.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas. Poet Alfonsina Storni began writing during a tumultuous childhood fraught with economic hardships, many disruptive moves, and an alcoholic father. She danced with a theatrical troupe and then became a teacher and journalist. She bore a child out of wedlock and found herself working as a single mother during socially oppressive times. In Buenos Aires she joined the emerging world of women’s rights, becoming an important literary voice in the movement. When her breast cancer returned, her lifelong passion for the sea culminated in her suicide off of the coast of Argentina. [The sky was about to embrace you, blind, and you had in your body of gray heliotropes a submerged city, with the misty sky like a chalice about to overflow with tears.] Program note: Commissioned for Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale of Naperville, Illinois, La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) by Adrienne Inglis for four-part treble chorus with nature soundtrack captures the mood of a river, a city, the cloudy sky, and the poet’s own profound melancholy. The sound of rain creates both the ambiance of a misty day on the river and the sensation of cathartic crying from great sadness and pain. The city’s reflection on the river’s surface gives the illusion that the city is submerged in the water. The reflection of the clouds hovering low over RÃo de La Plata looks like gray heliotrope flowers. The apocalyptic images of a submerged city and of tears overflowing from the chalice-sky eerily foreshadow rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming. The nature soundtrack of rain was recorded by the composer in the hill country of central Texas, July 2020. Performance note: This aleatoric, asynchronous composition is suitable for remote singing along with the video score and nature soundtrack. Observe the order of entrances, but know that it’s not meant to line up exactly. Finish a phrase even if another phrase has started. Diphthongs move immediately to the second vowel sound. Ya begins with the [dÊ’] sound and llanto begins with the [Ê’] sound, both typical of the Buenos Aires accent. Sing quite expressively except for the neblivelado section which is misty and veiled. The director may wish to indicate the rehearsals numbers or the singers may follow the time on the video-or both. Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768512). The Mass no. 2 in G major by Franz Schubert, D 167, was composed in 1815. This is the best known of the three shorter mass compositions which Schubert composed between the more elaborate first and fifth masses. In addition, the later Deutsche Messe or German Mass, D 872,and the ultimate sixth mass would be longer. The mass no. 2, commonly referred to as Schubert's Mass in G, was composed in less than a week (March 2 to 7, 1815), the year after his first mass had been successfully performed in Schubert's home parish.The second mass was originally more modestly scored than the first, requiring only a string orchestra and organ in addition to the soloists and choir. However, in the 1980s a set of parts for the mass were discovered at Klosterneuburg which are dated later than Schubert's full score.They not only include minor changes throughout the work, which would apparently represent Schubert's final intentions,they also include trumpet and timpani parts. Apart from some passages for the soprano soloist, the solistic interventions are very modest. Characteristically for Schubert, he is more interested in an overall devotional mood of a religious composition than in individualistic romantic text-expression. In this edition for women's voices, I use Schubert's first version for strings and organ which fits excellently to the sound of the women's choir.

'Particularly suitable for youth choir'. This distinction was given by the jury of the International Competition for Choral Composition 2013 to Pan Xingzimin's 'Poem I'. The text of this secular choral work for six-part mixed a-cappella choir (SSAATTB) was written by the composer himself in his native language, this being one of the special charms of this choral piece. Below the Chinese characters are transliterations which take the insecurity about the pronunciation from the European singers, as do long passages on simple syllables like 'hmm', 'ah' or 'dong'. The unfamiliar foreign language, easy-to-grasp sequences of notes and meticulously graded dynamics make this work an effective challenge which can nevertheless be mastered even by youth choirs.
