Sing Lullaby was commissioned by music director Michael Batcho for the Choir of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Milwaukee and composed in California during the summer of 2000. Originally scored for tenor solo, mixed chorus, oboe, French horn and violoncello obbligato and organ, an independent fabric for string orchestra was composed for a performance by the Choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Christmas of the same year. The setting was further developed for the debut performance of The Catholic University of America Chamber Choir and Chamber Players at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in December of 2002. In the 2008 revision, the composer decided that the obbligato trio of clarinet, French horn and bassoon most clearly evoked the ethos of shepherds, offering optimal timbral contrast to string orchestra and chorus. Substantial emendations of the entire score were made for the present edition of Sing Lullaby, first performed by The Catholic University of America Chamber Choir, University Singers, University Chorus and Symphony Orchestra at the Annual Christmas Concert for Charity at Washington's Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on 7 December 2012 with tenor Rick Christman, the composer conducting.Variation form, long favored by composers in settings of strophic music, imparts a perception of improvisation as singers and players alter harmonies, melody and rhythm to forward the unfolding narrative. Sensitive performance will caress the natural undulation of the largely ternary meter, tapering unstressed beats at the ends of phrases while maintaining the steady flow of the accompaniment.Two editions of the work are published: (I) for mixed chorus, solo, obbligato trio and organ and (II) for mixed chorus, solo, obbligato trio, string orchestra, harp and organ. The edition for chorus and obbligato instruments adds timbral variety to a Christmas concert while employing modest instrumental means which are easily available. Although in Version II both harp and organ are scored ad libitum, the harp adds significantly to the counterpoint of the obbligato instruments, providing further rhythmic impetus and textural variety. Conceived for lyric tenor, the solo may also be sung by soprano.

It is dedicated to Marisa Green.The work is inspired by a poem (Desiring the Solicitude of Rain) by American poet Kathleen Wakefield. The landscape of rich imagery in Wakefield's poem drives the extra-musical inspiration of this work. Musical material from the earlier vocal work is re-imagined in a purely orchestral context.Wakefield's poem contains images and messages of love and journey amidst the desire for the coming of rain. It is these ideas which provided the poetic conception of the work. Throughout the piece, the winds and brass play an extensive lyric and melodic role. A strand of singing lyricism runs throughout. Instruments are always exploring and highlighting theresonances in melodic and contrapuntal lines of other instruments. The work is cast in three sections (slow-fast-slow) plus a coda. The opening section begins with a forceful gesture that returns throughout the work as a signal. A melodic idea (containing the basic material of the work) is presented in the clarinet and it is developed throughout the rest ofthe section. A faster section emerges in a burst of energy as instruments hocket off each other.The next section is marked slow, ritualistic. The strings create an otherworldly harmonic cloud of gradually shifting and overlapping harmonies. Through this cloud, bassoon, trumpet,and flute solos emerge. Finally, the opening music is recalled in the coda as the potential energy continues to build. While his scores for both 633 Squadron (1963) and Operation Crossbow (1965) had boasted patriotic, major-key themes celebrating the heroics of the protagonists, composer Ron Goodwin took a different approach for Where Eagles Dare, generating his main theme for the picture out of the initial notes of an ascending minor scale. Rather than celebrate the heroics of the screen characters, the title music embodies the single-minded ambition of the protagonists to infiltrate the mountain fortress of Schloss Adler and complete their mission, no matter what the costs. The composer recalled in a 1994 interview that some of this approach came from the filmâ??s director, Brian Hutton. For instance, he wanted music at the beginning of the film but he also wanted to hear the airplane engines approaching from the distance, which is actually why he started off with just the side drums playing quietly and then building up and getting louder, so that you could actually hear the sound of the airplane before the orchestra comes in. After the snare drum and the â??Aâ? section of the main title comes a melodically related fugal section that, the composer told Randall D. Larson in 1984, was an idea that arose from the â??concept of people following each other around and dodging away from each other...[which] gave me the idea of writing a sort of fugue-style theme...and then I used that in various ways for all the sort of creeping and following and chasing that was going on throughout the film.â?Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. The piece was commissioned for the Eroica Trio by a noted patron for music, Kathryn Gould of Palo Alto, California. The world premiere took place at the Montalvo Chamber Music Series in California, March 5th, 2004. In a letter to the members of the trio dated 9/20/03, Mr. O’Connor lays out his plan for the new music.My initial ideas have sort of exploded in to the entire concept of the music with a real impact actually. Now I am piecing together the parts of it and then will eventually work on detail as I get the overall form under wrap. Here is what my inspiration for the music is; Johnny Cash.Johnny was a boyhood hero of mine, I used to sing his songs when I was 8, 9 and 10 years old, and played the guitar like him (sometimes up the fretboard strumming away). My mom used to help me transcribe all the lyrics off the albums, she also thought he hung the moon. As you can imagine, the passing of Cash for me this last week has been emotional. I am at my very best when I compose with my emotions at my sleeve, and guess what, it is time to do the Eroica piece. And I believe I will be able to craft a very unique tribute in to the form of a Piano Trio. There is something that is very fitting in all of this though. Cash was one of the few country music and rockabilly musicians to appeal to all ages, all types of people all the way into the MTV generation which is something that is hard to fathom. That one person can move musical mountains with his charisma and his voice. He sung about the prisons, riding the trains, about killing, and living, about lost love, about the gospel, about the downtrodden and the Native American, and about being stoned. His musical sound was the thing that got everybody though. He developed along with his guitar player Luther Perkins, a new and vibrant way to bring the music out.I also knew Johnny and worked with him, visited him privately at his home. Johnny also appeared on my album called Heroes, where he brought back the great story of the Devil coming down to Georgia to challenge young Johnny for the golden fiddle. My job now is to bridge what I am feeling about my inspiration for Cash, and bring it in to the instruments that I love writing for.I might not have imagined that this Johnny Cash concept would have worked out of hand, if it hadn’t been for your musicianship, insight fullness and graceful approaches in to the details of musical concepts and style. If the piece is good, then I will have no doubt that you will bring it to the forefront so others can grasp the intentions of the work, and in addition for others to enjoy playing it after you have brought it all out in to the open, and gave it a life. Juan MarÃa Solare: On the Concept of Limit (seven piano pieces) In this work crystallises an idea that has been haunting me for some time: that the titles of the individual pieces should read like lines of a poem. 1) Up to a Certain Point 2) Nothing Gets Lost 3) Yet All Will Be Forgotten 4) At the End of the Day 5) Even the Sky Has a Limit 6) However, However 7) Only the Present Has No Limits There is a fancy order of keys in this cycle: in ascending thirds (both major and minor but without a regularity). Indirectly, this is a structural quotation of Beethoven's variations Opus 34 (only that he chose a descending order of keys). Additionally, you will find three times 4/4 time signature and three times 3/4, and one instance of 5/8 (asymmetrically arranged). 1) C major (4/4) 2) E major (3/4) 3) G minor (4/4) 4) B major (4/4) 5) D minor (5/8) 6) F minor (3/4) 7) A major (3/4) The seventh and last piece is dedicated to Martina Lindner. Seen in this way, a concert reflects a value system that pits the individual against the group and poses a struggle of I against you. Surely this vehemence could be explained in a Beethovenian era when the concepts of human rights and individual freedom were fragile ideals.However, it is a different scale of values that my piano concerto tries to reflect: the idea of cooperation, of teamwork and of an orchestra as a living organism whose organs are not superior to one another, more vital than others, but fulfil different functions, qualitatively speaking.Every soloist plays a leading role, but this does not imply either subordination to the rest or denigration or subjugation of the rest. The fact that the soloist is sometimes in the foreground does not imply a victory over the others. The very concept of victory is meaningless here.At times, the soloist will fulfil a leadership role, at others he or she will underpin from passivity what is happening in the orchestra, intentionally from the shadows, as a grey eminence. And at other times - why not - he will question what the majority is doing.It is not a rough relationship of me against you, but there is also a we.The composition and orchestration of this piano concerto was made possible by a grant from the Senator for Culture of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. This work was funded by an artist's grant as part of the Bremen-Corona-Hilfen programme.The premiere by the orchestra of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft is scheduled for the beginning of 2024.
