Together with the exercises in the Appendices the entire book (sold separately) is 316 pages long. This piece of music is composed for solo violin. An atonal structure having no reference to any particular key. Using the octatonic scale (i.e. set class [013568A]), as the fundamental structure, and then growing each note in the scale with pre-determined set classes creates this pattern of phononic sound. Using set classes [027], [012], and the complement of set class [027], which is [01235678A], creates the harmonic structure for this piece. Set class [027] is interesting because it contains an axis of inversional symmetry, and hence, has a relation to set class [012]. Elements of the twelve-tone-technique, such as prime form, retrograde, inversion, and retrograde inversion, are used to add depth and dimension to this piece. The difficulty of this piece is classified as: easy to play. Two pages in length and contains 52 bars of notation. The sound is a bit creepy with bursts of tonic fluorescence. The melody is slow-moving, and the main rhythmic driver is the accompaniment, with tritonic arpeggios through. Advanced level simply due to the unusual features. Published by Ronald Beckett (A0.769546). The Octatonic Suite No. 1 for solo piano was written specifically for the 2002 Arcady CD A Beckett Miscellany. It draws upon the Baroque dance suite structure which by its very design provides contrast from one movement to the next. The stylised dances of this suite follow essentially this anticipated arrangement and its seven pieces are indeed all rooted in F. Of the modes of limited transposition favoured by composers since the early 1900s, the octatonic scale, which alternates whole and half steps, is probably the most useful in that it is able to suggest a full range of harmonic and melodic sonorities. This is a fun and not too difficult suite that pianists enjoy very much. This edition is arranged so as to facilitate page turns.
