This score is for two Readers, handbells (3 octaves) and organ.A medieval folk belief of old Europe was that of all the animals miraculously starting to speak at the birth of the Christ Child. In about 1630, William Austin, a poet and lawyer in London, drew on this traditional belief to write one of his Carrols, for Christmas-day, in which he imagined what the most Stentorian animal of all, the rooster, might say about the new-born Holy Infant in Bethlehem. In setting William Austin’s carrol to music, James Siddons has given the organ the role of creating a soundscape to underpin the drama of Chanticleer’s proclamation. Following each of Austin’s three stanzas (in dramatic recitation by the Readers), an adaptation of the old French tune O Come, Emmanuel is played by handbells in a harmonic style that recalls the pealing of church bells on Christmas morning. This work is appropriate for the beginning of Advent and Christmas day worship, and in a service or program of Christmas music; for example, a service of lessons and carols. The purchase price includes permission to make 14 copies of the score (2 Readers, 8-10 handbell players, organist, and conductor) and permission to video-record a performance for posting on school or church websites and in streaming broadcast.

Its relatively flat topography and high elevation lead to intense winds and unpredictable storms bestowing the plateau's colorful moniker. Contrary to the title, the music reflects a compilation of impressions from multiple visits over a decade’s time, gathered with my son’s first-hand reports of overnight stays, rather than a single day’s experience. My original objective for the music was to portray the stark and stony landscape alternatively caressed and buffeted in a stew of breezes and gales, sunshine and storms. However, as I was writing the piece it became apparent the true theme of the music is rather a daily high-altitude drama pitting light versus darkness, a drama staged on the plateau’s rocks, meadows, streams, and lakes depicting a perpetually shifting kaleidoscope of distinctive lighting unlike any I have experienced elsewhere. The transparent, thin air reveals indigo blue skies and scalding-white clouds overarching stunning vistas stretching a hundred miles or more. The landscape glitters under the radiance of high latitude sunlight. The only word I can think of to describe the golden glow of sunbeams slicing through a summer snow squall is ethereal. The utter absence of artificial light makes for the darkest night skies and brightest stars one can experience on earth.

Score and parts. 41 pages. Aaron Hettinga #636010. Published by Aaron Hettinga (A0.1030615). William Billings (1746-1800) was North America’s first great choral composer. He spent most of his life in Boston, working at various times as a tanner or as minor civic official, and occasionally as a church musician. Billings seems to have had little formal music training, but when he was just 22, he also set himself up as an itinerant singing-master, teaching “singing-schools,†where children and adults could learn the rudiments of musical notation and solfege. To feed the market he and other singing-masters had helped to create, Billings published six collections of music, mostly for SATB voices, The first of these, The New England Psalm-Singer (1770) featured a frontispiece engraved by his friend Paul Revere. Billings was fairly prosperous by 1780s, but his good fortune faded in the 1790s. His final collection of music, The Continental Harmony of 1794, was published for his benefit by a group of Boston friends. Billings died destitute in 1800. Billings composed some 340 pieces, mostly collected in his printed editions. This music has a rough-edged and sturdy beauty that is distinctly different from anything in contemporary Europe. The vast majority of Billings’s works were hymns or “psalm tunes.†He was particularly attracted to the great English hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748), though Billings himself wrote verses for many of his hymns. One of the most famous Billings “psalm tunes,†Chester is not a Christian hymn, but rather a patriotic song of defiance directed against the British. Billings spent nearly all of the Revolutionary War in Boston and made no secret of his patriot sentiments. Chester was first published in 1770, but when he republished it in his The Singing-Master’s Assistant during the height of the war in 1778, Billings added a verse calling out the “infernal league†of the leading British generals Howe, Burgoyne, Clinton, Prescot and Cornwallis. Many brass-players will know Chester from the finale of William Schuman’s 1957 band piece A New England Triptych. Billings also composed over 50 “fuging-tunesâ€â€”a genre that usually included a short introduction and a repeated contrapuntal section. (These fuging sections usually begin with imitation, but they are otherwise not at all like classical fugues written in Europe at the time.) The fuging-tune Creation is one of his later works, published in The Continental Harmony of 1794, and experiments with the form. It sets two verses of the Watts hymn “When I With Pleasing Wonder Stand†though final line of verse 1 is repeated in a striking phrase that suddenly moves twice as fast (m.15). The fuging section begins in m.30, and rather than the usual exact repeat, Billing writes an entirely new and more elaborate second section beginning at m.44. Billings first published the simple but beautiful Africa in 1770, and published a revised version in 1778; the later version appearing with the Isaac Watts hymn “Now Shall My Inward Joys Arise.†I first arranged Africa in 1995, for the Glenwood Moravian Trombone Choir (Madison, WI), and I edited it for this publication. Sonata in a Simple Scale for Viola and PianoThe Simple Scale of the title is a series of alternating whole steps and half steps. There are three versions; any particular note will belong to two of the three. Thus, the two scales that include C go up either a whole step from C (C D Eb F F#…) or a half step (C C# D# E F#…); the third scale excludes C entirely (B C# D E F…). These scales allow for a variety of melodies, which often take on a modal character, and familiar chords, including major, minor, and diminished.Although the scale is simple, the Sonata is not for elementary players. The viola range goes to the C two octaves above middle C and there are occasional double and triple stops and stopped harmonics, and frequent meter changes. Also, the unusual scale does not fit the standard fingering patterns for either instrument. That said, the sonata is intended to be enjoyable for proficient, rather than virtuosic, players.In the introduction to the Sonata-Allegro movement, the viola explores motives and intervals, with subtle embellishment from the piano. These phrases build to a three-octave descending presentation of the simple scale; a trill then leads into the main theme. The piano sets up a jaunty accompaniment pattern, over which the viola plays the theme in measure-long segments. The second theme is a long, legato line in the viola that spans two octaves. The viola then sets up a two-measure ostinato, joined by a lumbering piano bass, before the piano treble floats on top with a melancholy closing theme. The development section plays mostly with the main theme, shifting meters as the two instruments engage in dialog. A bridging trill takes us into the recapitulation, but now the viola plays the jaunty accompaniment pattern, and the piano has the main theme. After the return of the second theme, varied in its accompaniment, the piano presents the ostinato of the closing theme, and the viola takes the melody, leading to a quiet and playful finish.In the second movement (Song), the piano begins a slow, rather dark theme, joined by the viola, and ending in a rising question that leads into the second section. Presented simply by the viola, this lilting 7/8 theme has a folk-song quality. It is repeated and embellished several times before the first theme returns, ending in a loud and angry exclamation.The Scherzo is a 6/8 whirlwind. The viola presents rapid repeated notes punctuated with three rising or falling notes; the piano enters gradually until both are giving a forceful statement. In the middle section, the viola sets up a whirling pattern with a drone, while the piano plays a dark version of the closing theme from the first movement. The first theme returns and the movement gallops to a rapid finish.The Rondo begins with an introduction that explores octaves and trills, leading into the main theme, with slightly dissonant 4/4 viola measures alternating with 7/8 answers in the piano. Bridging measures in 5/8 take us into a relaxed, waltz-like interlude of solo viola. A fast section with a touch of fugato follows, with the main theme presented in diminution by the viola at the end. This leads into a second interlude, this one exploring octaves, trills, and clusters in unmetered fragments that the instrumentalists play at their own tempos. The viola then emerges with a confident new theme, joined after a while by the piano. The main theme then returns in a rollicking 3/4 version that brings the piece to a close.

Professor Ma believed that all the arts, although they present differently on the usages of materials or techniques, the essence and highest acheivement of all arts must be the same, including both music and painting. Meditation on Paintings in Ink was directly inspired by the techniques of Chinese traditional ink painting and the concept of the mutuality in virtuality and reality. The composer attempted to transform the philosophy that derive from the virtuality-reality relationship into the composition, presented it as the contrast between time and space, the alternation of texture and density, or, the changing of emptiness and fullness, etc., in order to establish an artistic atmosphere of musical painting. Meditation on Paintings in Ink was commissioned by the Council for Cultural Affairs, premiered in the National Concert Hall, on 25th of November 1995. It was programed in the Euterpe: Spring and Autumn concert series Autumn 1995: A Night of Chamber Music, held by the Chew’s Culture Foundation. The world premiere was conducted by Hwei-Ming Twu and the nine cellists were Wan-Ling Sun, Jyh-Ing Huang, Pei-Ling Cheng (Yi-Chin Cheng) , Shih-Fei Tseng, Wan-Rong Hung, Yun-Yu Huang, Chu-Chuan Liu, Monica C.F. These photos were but a few that really made an impression on me and made me feel almost as I were there, even though Cindy was there (in one of the most romantic places in the world) as musicians would say, “solo. So the title of this piece suggests a telling of the story in pictures from her perspective.In performing this piece, it is preferable to have a tenor saxophonist who is equally comfortable in an orchestral setting as in a jazz quintet setting. Though all the jazz quintet parts are very specifically written, with either chord voicings and suggested solos, there is room for improvisation in these parts, but using a keen ear and direction to know when to align properly with the orchestra.In my recording of this piece, Maynard Ferguson Band alumni, Andy Weinzler is the featured tenor saxophonist. Many Western New York musicians came together to record this piece, and I thank them all for their incredible musicianship and willingness to perform this piece.

LIKE A WHIRLING SAND CLOCKfor Clarinet, Cello and Piano (2006) Duration: 10:30 minutes Instrumentation: Clarinet, Cello and Piano PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: While composing Like a Whirling Sand Clock for clarinet, cello and piano I was occupied with the notion of leaking time process which is a micro cosmos of a larger process, best to be described as going back in time.In September 2006, I feel that the world is standing on a pivot point: on one hand, the various religious and political forces insist on rooting themselves deeper and deeper into what they see as the only truth, while in reality such ideas and especially the religious ones are extremely fundamentalist, reactionary and ill-minded. For me, such clashes of ideas and ideals are reminiscences of the dark middle-ages days and the crusades, where people killed people because of blind belief. Yet, in our days, with sophisticated mass destruction tools as developed most efficiently by humanity, one asks himself towards where we are heading and what will bring tomorrow. The feeling of evaporating, leaking time gets stronger and stronger while our era's events remind more and more what history books tells us.While imagining an ever-whirling sand clock that drops its sand grains one by one while the sand pile is collected at the upper tube and not the lower one, (thus indicating a going back in time process), one can imagine visually what I have tried to portrait with sounds.Like a Whirling Sand Clock was generously commissioned in memory of Adele and John Gray for clarinetist Chen Halevi.
