With frequent changes between major and minor, the stirring march themes reappear as romantic melodies. Of special interest are the trumpet and piano solos, and a section for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and piano, in homage to Mozart and Beethoven, who wrote beautiful quintets for this combination of instruments. Not all parts are necessary. They were included so as not to leave out members of a band I was playing in. For example, the alto clarinet part duplicates the third B flat clarinet part. There are tenor sax cues in the alto sax part for the solo in measures 46 and 47 in case a tenor sax is not available. A PIANO IS REQUIRED. I don't have a good band sound clip but you can listen to the piece arranged for wind quintet and piano. It is the 1st movement of my Sextet for Winds and Piano. This audio is attached to that piece here or on my music website, www.garyfriedmanmusic.net. Duration 5 minutes. Year 2000.

March Fantasy Low Brass Quartet or Choir(Two Trombones, Bass Trombone, Tuba)Brad Howland (SOCAN)Written for a standard band or orchestra low brass section, this piece also sounds excellent with all parts doubled. An opening fanfare leads into a toe-tapping march, followed by a fugue reminiscent of Bach, a tuba recitative and solo, a recap of the march, and a majestic finale. The bass trombone part could be played on a tenor trombone, but both 2nd and 3rd trombone will need F attachments. In the sample recording the tuba part is performed by the composer on euphonium, so it might not sound quite like a tuba!

My Fantasy for Horn and Orchestra featured on the CD, Concerto, from Roven Records available on iTunes.After a mysterious opening with the horn rising from the depths the orchestra breaks into a jagged fugue which the horn then quells. A lyrical melody follows after a short cadenza which gives way to a march macabre. After some working out of material the fugue and lyrical melody return before a rousing finale. A great show piece for the soloist!SCORE SHOULD BE PRINTED ON TABLOID SIZE PAPER. The flutist, composer and professor of music Theophilus Bucher had a settled and successful life after his immigration to England, where he is reported as newly arrived in 1831. We are lucky to have a monument at his grave in Edinburgh (in the Dean Cemetery) which gives both his date and place of birth, as well as the date and place of his demise. Theophile Bucher was born at Schlestadt, Alsace, on March 13, 1802, and died at Edinburgh, December 20, 1871. The obituary published in Signale für die Musikalische Welt, in March 1872, which states he came from Naples, from French parents. That obituary, although in German, gives his name in the French form of Theophile Boucher, the only source which gives this spelling for his surname. Certainly, his early successes and earliest publications seem to be in Naples, although he is reported in other parts of Italy as well. Grand fantasia and brilliant variations: for the flute, on Paganini's air The witches dance, with an accompaniment for the pianoforte. Composed & dedicated to his friend G. Rudall Esqre., by T. Bucher.This publication was listed as new in the last month in October 1832 in the Harmonicon. George Rudall, (1781-1871), founder of Rudall and Rose in 1821. An arrangement of Paganini’s Witches Dance (his op. 8) was already published in volume one of the Flutonicon (1834).

A parody of music hall clichés, it was conceived as a choreographic stage work and by modern standards can be considered a ballet.Satie gave it the whimsical subtitle fantaisie sérieuse (A Serious Fantasy). It was premiered at the Théâtre du Colisée in Paris on June 14, 1921, conducted by Vladimir Golschmann. The composer later arranged it for piano four hands.Satie composed this set of solo dances between July and October 1920. It was a high-spirited throwback to his turn-of-the-century cabaret idiom after a brief serious period that had produced the cantata Socrate (1918) and the piano Nocturnes (1919). This piece is inspired by two river adventures from the days when I aspired to be a professional trumpet player. The first adventure was a kayaking trip on the Charles River in Boston, MA and the second was a tubing trip on the Huron River in Ann Arbor, MI. While lazily floating down these rivers with my friends, I imagined us with our instruments, laughing and playing. It is a joyful image that sticks with me to this day, however, I invite you to imagine your own fantasy while listening to this piece! A slightly different version of this piece premiered on May 25th, 2013 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Herndon, VA. This was one of two original compositions that I performed for my senior recital in high school. This version was premiered on March 28th, 2017 in Britton Recital Hall at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and was part of a student composer’s concert. ​More arrangements and originals by JP Wogaman II can be found at www.wogamusic.com

Review of performance by members of Fear No Music (Inez Voglar, violin; Jeff Payne, piano) on inaugural concert of Cascadia Composers, March, 2009 (Aaron Berenbach, Northwest Reverb): Like an André Rieu opium dream, Noland's waltz slowly emerged from a morass of sound, solidified into a lush, decadent, Viennese waltz before dissolving and reforming again and again. Like Bernstein, Noland made great use of the familiar, in this case the easily recognized waltz form, but made it personal, unique, and extremely interesting in his interpretation. The second movement is slow and romantic and, I think, one of the best pieces I have composed. The third movement is light-hearted and contains a contrapuntal section with substantial dissonance. Cristóbal Oudrid y Segura was a Spanish pianist, composer of zarzuelas and conductor. He was the son of Cristóbal Oudrid y Estarón, born in Madrid in 1793, a musician in the Napoleonic troops stationed in Badajoz, and director of the National Militia's band from 1825, and Antonia Segura González, born in Badajoz in 1801. He was married to Vicenta Muñoz Vallejo, a native of the same city. As a composer, he is remembered for revitalizing the genre, for pieces in his zarzuelas El molinero de Subiza and El postillón de la Rioja, and for the piece El sitio de Zaragoza, originally the incidental music he composed for the eponymous drama by Juan Lombía. In 1851, together with Joaquín Gaztambide, Rafael Hernando, Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, José Inzenga y Olona y Salas, he founded the Sociedad Artístico Musical para el cultura de la zarzuela. As a conductor, he directed the orchestra of the Teatro Real in Madrid and the Teatro de la Zarzuela. He is buried in the patio de la Concepción de la Sacramental de San Isidro. His grave has a medallion with the composer's effigy made by the Italian sculptor Benedetto Civiletti, a specialist in funerary monuments for cemeteries. The siege of Zaragoza is a descriptive fantasy on military themes composed by Cristóbal Oudrid around 1848. The work was originally conceived as incidental music for the play El Sitio de Zaragoza of 1808 by Juan Lombía, a drama in three acts and written in verse. The music was to be played throughout the play and ended with a rondalla playing the Jota aragonesa. As the piece became very popular with the public, Oudrid made an anthology with it and the rest of the work to create the instrumental work in the form of a descriptive fantasy, independent of the play. During the second half of the 20th century, the work gained popularity due to the national exaltation of heroes of the sieges such as Agustina de Aragón. It was common for military bands and police groups to perform it in recitals and today it continues to be performed by municipal and military bands as well as by orchestras and groups in various versions that offer different readings of the work.
