This lyrical piece is a delightful way to introduce your young band to ballad style. Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes. Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808684). Irving Berlin’s composition Alexander’s Ragtime Band was not only his first hit, it was also one of the most popular songs ever. It first gained widespread recognition when Emma Carus sang it in Chicago in 1911, and then it really took off when Al Jolson performed it in New York. It’s no wonder the popularity of Alexander’s has been so long-lived. Both words and music are absolutely bouncy and upbeat. The lyrics proclaim the Ragtime Band to be the best . . . in the land and invite the listener to come on and hear the group, even to meet its leader! The tune is energetic and lively, a salute to the toe-tapping Dixieland style that even then was developing in New Orleans.  This arrangement takes the natural exuberance of the melody and raises it a couple of notches. Wide open and sprightly, it features the trombone, but also gives each of the other parts a chance to shine, too. In addition to several iterations of the well-known chorus, it also includes the seldom-heard verse and even throws in a few true ragtime licks, quotes from Scott Joplin and Percy Wenrich. The tempo is a bouncy, cut-time 76, with some fairly tricky rhythms and one ritardando near the middle. Trumpet 1 plays a couple of notes above its staff, one A and one B. Trombone plays F above its staff several times and one brief G. Tuba’s lowest note is F below the staff. This arrangement was completed in 2018, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 33 seconds. Think of the story behind this music as about a young lady who  just loves the waltz, and loves to sing and dance to its lilting triple time.  Her dancing partner is a dashing, ever so handsome young man, who sweeps her off her feet and takes her breath away with his charm and grace, as they float away on the wings of A Dance In Triple Time!I originally composed this piece as a little warm up ditty for my chorus, but as I worked the melody and the harmony, it grew into just a little bit more than a warm up exercise. We always enjoyed singing this little piece for our audiences. And they always enjoyed hearing it. One caveat; The lyrics go by quickly! Leads, use your best diction and pronunciation, so the story doesn't get lost. Harmony voices, keep the melody prominent, by always singing your la-las at least one dynamic notch below the melody!Choose the waltz tempo of your choice - very relaxed to very lilting in 1.  Base your choice on being able to deliver the lyrics with great clarity, especially in the faster passages. Be sure to observe the accelerandos, broadening tempos, a tempos, legatos, and staccatos. They all have much to do with delivering the style of this piece, especially the off beat la-las. Some pairs are staccato, in other pairs, the first la is legato, the second la is staccato.The metronome marks more accurately describe the accelerandos and broadenings. On the repeat at 11, a slight increase in the tempo will add urgency and intensity. Keep the melody prominent as it moves to different voices, beginning at 37. Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and recorded on 17 October 1963, it was the first Beatles record to be made using four-track equipment.With advance orders exceeding one million copies in the United Kingdom, I Want to Hold Your Hand would have gone straight to the top of the British record charts on its day of release (29 November 1963) had it not been blocked by the group's first million-seller She Loves You, their previous UK single, which was having a resurgence of popularity following intense media coverage of the group. Taking two weeks to dislodge its predecessor, I Want to Hold Your Hand stayed at number one for five weeks and remained in the UK top 50 for 21 weeks in total.It was also the group's first American number-one hit, entering the Billboard Hot 100 chart on 18 January 1964 at number 45 and starting the British Invasion of the American music industry. By 1 February it topped the Hot 100, and stayed there for seven weeks before being replaced by She Loves You. It remained on theBillboard chart for 15 weeks.I Want to Hold Your Hand became the Beatles' best-selling single worldwide selling more than 12 million copies. TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME (Supertramp) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This is an arrangement for 4 guitars (or a large ensemble) of Supertramp’s 'Take The Long Way Home'.The original is nothing less than spectacular, running for a full 5 minutes with verse, chorus and instrumental breaks, and utilising rich orchestration and texture. I’ve captured all of the material in my arrangement, changing the key just slightly so that the shapes and melody are comfortable, and simplifying one or two non-guitar-friendly progressions in the breaks. The bass-line and harmony are close to the original. Guitar 4 could be played an octave lower on a contra guitar, although I’ve used subharmonics in the opening to give the illusion of a deeper bass than a guitar can manage.In order to make the piece music-stand-friendly, I’ve needed to use repeat marks meaning that the second verse has the same bass-line as the first, but a simple change in volume will provide a suitable feeling of building as the piece progresses. The opening section needs to imitate the indefinite sustain of high-pitched violins. By using harmonics across all four parts, and interleaving the repetitions, we can get a convincing sustain (or plucking at random times across the parts, or even a tremolo would also create the illusion of indefinite sustain). But if it doesn’t work in your ensemble, simply start the piece at A and omit all harmonics from that point onwards.My arrangement will suit an intermediate ensemble. Parts 3 and 4 are slightly easier, but skilled players on these lines can make magic happen by a confident use of articulation to shape the music’s texture.I hope you enjoy performing this!
