With Nightfall, I wanted to capture the time at night when one is alone with his thoughts. Silences between thoughts can become almost deafening in their volume. In this time of ambiguity between sleep and wakefulness, the mind is allowed to wander into many strange and sometimes frightening regions.Beyond the main motivic material--the minor 6th pattern and various harmonizations of the chromatic scale, I found that I was using combinations of A minor (actually octatonic) and B Lydian as dual tonal centers of this piece. Since it was written for solo piano, I decided to let the compositional process be open-ended; some of what is written here is the result of improvisation, followed by painstaking revision. You may notice a touch of Chopin in the Nocturne sections, although this nocturne is a bit creepier than the Chopin.

This is not your typical nocturne. This is night as it really is for many people: a time of restlessness, of anxiety, in which you lie awake or even feel the need to get out of the house for a while. This music is for all of those nights when you wonder what on earth is happening to the world around you, when you feel troubled by the contradictions between you and the world, when you dread the morning news of the results of an election or referendum; when you just want to shout at the world, I'm out of here ... imagine a night in which you need to step outside to gather your thoughts. You feel the chill of the night air as you stand gazing up at the sky. As clouds move above, you turn over in your mind the things that are troubling you. Gradually you begin to see more clearly the difference between the things you cannot change and those that you can; and with that realisation comes serenity and finally you are able to sleep.The composer, who is a passionate believer in unity rather than division, wrote this music three days after Britain's 2016 referendum on its continued membership of the European Union, reflecting his feelings about the outcome. This is, therefore, as deeply personal a piece of music as you'll get. Include it in a program and it will help to put the rest of the program into perspective.The music itself demonstrates that nonatonic and octatonic modes of limited transposition can be used to create melodies and harmonic progressions that combine tension with great beauty. At notated tempi the work lasts just under ten minutes. It is of advanced intermediate difficulty, the main challenges for the player being the complex modality and the shifting rhythms. The sound file provided here is the composer's own live performance, recorded on Saturday, September 10th, 2016. It's simple, unadorned melody offers solace to a modern, hectic world. The lullaby-like quality of the meter brings to mind images of the babe being rocked gently in his mother's arms. I knew that I would write an arrangement of this carol, and it seemed to flow from my thoughts almost complete with only a few small tweaks. It is inspired by memories of holding a glowing candle in the church as the congregation sings, lit only by the warmth of candlelight. There is also a somewhat haunting quality reminding me of Christmases past and those loved ones who are no longer with us.

My piano cover arrangement of Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars by Antonio Carlos Jobim.Corcovado (known in English as Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars) is a bossa nova song and jazz standard written by Antônio Carlos Jobim in 1960. English lyrics were later written by Gene Lees. The Portuguese title refers to the Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro.Tony Bennett recorded the first popular English cover of Quiet Nights with new lyrics by Buddy Kaye in 1963.  Numerous English cover recordings then followed sometimes credited to Lees and/or Kaye and Lees, including the Andy Williams recording of the song with English lyrics, reaching #92 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #18 in the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart in 1965. Also receiving air-play, contemporaneously with Andy Williams' recording of Quiet Nights, was Kitty Kallen's version.
