About the music Both pieces of this diptych are miniatures with a structure quite similar to each of the pieces of the Album für die Jugend Opus 68 by Robert Schumann. The melodies are strongly rooted in Japanese music (particularly obvious in the second piece). Aesthetically, this is neoclassical music (a quite broad concept nowadays). Fans of Erik Satie, Ludovico Einaudi or Joep Beving will possibly feel at home. Both pieces were composed on 6 June 2020 (the first one with my daughter Laura sleeping on my breast). For my piece, I adapted this idea und -not quite humbly- think that is better now: Do weep because it’s overBut also smile because it happened Why is it better now? Because… where is the issue with weeping? The first step is to accept that pain exists. Nobody has the moral authority to deny you the possibility of crying. Weeping is not a shame or a disgrace. Besides, only he who weeps is credible when he laughs. By the way, these words are sometimes attributed to Confucius. I leave to you the task of determining whether Jacobowski borrowed this thought from him.

My guitar teacher taught me how to arrange it for fingerstyle solo guitar (and contributed the most interesting and fun-to-play parts) since I was so sad about Nick Cave cancelling the 2021 tour (which had already been postponed from 2020) because of the pandemic. This intermediate arrangement contains Intro, Verse and Chorus. Suitable for music lessons.

His madrigals include Weep, weep mine eyes, Weep, O mine eyes and Draw on, sweet night. He also wrote the poem, Love not me for comely grace. His style is characterized by delicate writing for the voice, acute sensitivity to the text and the use of “false relations between the major and minor modes.The text for this one goes:Ah! cannot sighs not tears, nor aught else move thee To pity me, who more than life do love thee?O cruel fates! see, now away she’s flying,And fly, alas! alas! and leave me dying.Farewell, most fair, farewell, yet more disdainful: Was never grief like mine, nor death more painful.No 30 from the Second Set of Madrigals, 1598. originally for SSATTB a capella. As Wilbye labelled this Apt for Viols or Voices, I felt justified in making this arrangement.

No 5 - I Saw My Lady WeepingTaken from Thomas Morley's First Book Of Ayres. This is the first verse of a well known Elizabethan poem (anon) which was also set by John Dowland with the slightly different title of I Saw My Lady Weep. Dowland set all three verses whereas Morley only the first, I have given the other two in the notes within the score for information. The song is through composed with the last two lines repeated, not uncommon at that time, and has quite an elaborate texture making it more challenging to play. Morley’s description of the publication was: Little short songs to sing and play to the lute with the base viole. I have substituted guitar for lute and cello for bass viole, chords have been re-voiced in places to better suit the guitar but no alteration has been made to the harmony. .

Do not stand at my grave and weep is a new setting of Mary Frey's touching poem, which speaks in the voice of the deceased, in tones of comfort and peace to those who are left behind. This setting is lush and expressive, requiring only four parts, but allowing for some occasional divisi. There is another version of this same title available on this site which has more complex divisi parts, for those with singers capable of these. A piano reduction is available.

I started writing what would become One Sows for the Benefit of Another Age in 2013, as I was sketching ideas for what became a piano trio. I liked what I had created, but two things became evident: The piece was destined to be for orchestra, and I was not good enough as a composer to finish it. Over the next seven years, I kept returning to this piece in my spare time, adding some sections, tweaking some others, and at some point I gained the experience to finish it. But the trade-off was that I no longer had the time. At least until Spring of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic put most of my projects on hold, and I was able to return to--and finish--the work.The title came last. My ideas while I was writing centered around Americana (I was listening to a lot of Copland, Barber, and Ives) and infusing my history and experience in the Ozarks and on the plains. I knew I wanted to make use of the idea of illumination, of dawn. I wanted to start in the shadows and end aglow. The darkness was such a defining feature that my working title was Aegri Somnia, loosely translated from Latin as troubled dreams. As I continued working, I realized that the focus wasn't the darkness--the focus was the change.I discuss change a lot in my teaching. Students often see change as transformative change--massive, radical, sweeping change, like winning the lottery, or winning an audition. Transformative change is easy--it usually involves hoping for a situation or a Deus ex Machina, and if it happens, it benefits us immediately. Iterative change, however--small, repeated, incremental change that builds up over time--is hard. An extra half-hour of work every day, a little extra contributed to savings every month, these changes add up over time and become significant. But it requires intention and action, and it doesn't reap immediate benefits. It may not end up benefitting us at all.One Sows changes iteratively. It starts from a dark place, but is sprinkled with seeds of hope. A descending motive introduced in the violins brings us out of the darkness, albeit slowly. The idea spreads, develops, and eventually becomes part of a new idea, a new paradigm, that takes over.In searching for a title, I came across Serit ut alteri saeclo prosit, North Dakota's Latin state motto, whose English translation is the title of this work. It's a recent addition to the North Dakota statutes, but a timeless message. Our work isn't finished yet.
